I have come across this issue myself and know it can be frustrating. The article below may help with the repeated password prompt request on your Mac.
Also, try closing the mail program and opening it again as it could be an issue with attempting to authenticate the account. You may have to delete the account and add it back. Below, I have provided the steps on how to process this.

It's bizarre, but after months of putting up with the mail issue - it righted itself almost immediately I'd posted the question! However I am saving your reply - just in case the fault reoccurs.
My issue with the Ical 404 fault is ongoing though.
