somehow about 4000 photos out of 10000 disappeared when I moved to the newest iphoto and attached my external hard drive with the old iphoto library to it and switched between libraries using alt to open it.  i was unable to get iphoto to see the missing 4000 even though they were in all images.

i went to all images on the new mac and dragged it into iphoto and created a new library.

it seemed to work but then a few hours later when i looked at my photos they are all just faces!!!!!!!! and in all images the photos are all just faces too.

what on earth is this?

What on earth is this? It is what you told iPhoto to do  --  All images is jsut that - a list of all images on yoru computer - all photos (two ro three versionsof each in iPhoto), the faces thumbnails, and probably icons and other images that have nothing to do with iPhoto - basically the library you created doing that is worthless and you might as well trash it

Going back to the propblem you are trying to solve - how about some details? What version of iPhoto and or the OS? What version of iPhoto did you have before? What format is the external drive?

somehow about 4000 photos out of 10000 disappeared when I moved to the newest iphoto and attached my external hard drive with the old iphoto library to it and switched between libraries using alt to open it.

Can you provide soem more details about these statements?

until there is more information a guess is to depress teh option key and launch iphoto switching back to the library on the external drive - quit iPhoto and Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library  database

ok, so here is the full story.

the new iphoto is 9.2.1 on an imac os 10.6.8.

    the old imac was 10.4.11

i copied the iphoto library off the old imac onto a la cie external hard drive and plugged that into the new imac.

i opened iphoto using that library and it did all the updating to the new iphoto. ok so that can be called MAIN library with all old photos about 10000.

also new photos were added to the new iphoto library on the new computer SECONDARY library and we then switched between the two.

then we realised 4000 photos had disappeared from main library, the folders were empty on iphoto.

we took the imac to the applestore and the genius bar created a new iphoto library by dragging in 'all images'. which you are telling me was a bad move and i believe you.

got home, opened iphoto.  the faces thing began and i left it alone for a couple of hours to do whatever it was doing.

closed it. went to look at 'all images' and found strange face thumbnails in there.  panicked.  opened iphoto.  many photos cropped to just face and when zoomed in stayed as just face, small. obviously clicked on photos not on faces but still seeing many just faces or wierdly cropped photos.  landscapes etc are ok.

will try and give you any more info you need......

    then

to depress the option key and launch iphoto switching back to the library on the external drive - quit iPhoto and Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library  database

i did try rebuilding the library database before we created the all  images library.  the external hard drive library still only shows 4000  photos instead of 10000. one problem is how to get a library that finds  all 10000 but the immediate problem is why iphoto has made so many  photos into what seems to be cropped faces (thumbnails?) and wont let me  view them as whole photos. is there a way to see the whole photos? is there a bug in iphoto or faces? why would it turn all the photos into faces?

    We are in a loop

iPhoto did not turn anything into anything - it simply imported what you told it to - all images

    As My first post explained

All images is just that - a list of all images on your computer - all photos (two or three versions of each in iPhoto), the faces thumbnails, and probably icons and other images that have nothing to do with iPhoto

No bug - simply user error

And in the same post I suggested a fix - now several posts later you say taht you tried that prior to ever posting - in order to avoid continuing to expain things and to make suggestions that you have already tried please list what you have tried and please read the responses so we do not loop back and ask the same questions again

thanks for trying to help.   i am trying to understand why so many of my photos in the library seem to be just faces. that is why i thought there is a bug, because i cant understand why it is not letting me view them as whole photos as they obviously exist somewhere as whole photos. surely its something to do with 'faces' on iphoto as 'faces' view should disappear when i click on 'photos'.

if i delete the library created by all images i will be left with the library on the external hard drive which only finds 4000 photos out of the 10000, and sorry yes i did do a rebuild database back at the start.....

can i create a new library from another file - masters? or something like that?

    thanks.

i am trying to understand why so many of my photos in the library seem to be just faces

Because you imported the face thumbnails into iPhoto as noted several times

    As My first post explained

All images is just that - a list of all images on your computer - all photos (two or three versions of each in iPhoto), the faces thumbnails, and probably icons and other images that have nothing to do with iPhoto

Yes you can create a new library from the photos in the masters folder

But first try to rebuild the database again - if that does not work this time download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and use it's rebuild command and see how it does - that will create a totally new liberary leaving your existing one untouched so you can go back to it if needed
