I got this message today as well. The solution? I turned on my phone (iPhone 5) screen to the lockscreen before plugging it in. It works now. It might not be a permanent fix, but it's a fix.

    Cheers.

This problem appeared on Saturday have trawled the net for solutions.  First I tried restoring the phone and that made no difference.  I tried multiple chargers no difference. Blew out the dock connector with a air can,no difference. Changed the battery no difference.  Came close to taking apple up on their £123 warrenty service and found a solution just in time.

Some one recommended a toothbrush dipped in perfume and then to scrub the dock connecter pinned.  As I had given up i didnt bother to turn the phone off, but for safety I think I should have.  Anyhow I put the phone on charge and the **** message came up again. I also put battery doctor on the phone and with this on I noticed if I wiggled the plug it started charging. But still didnt get a lightening strike in the iphone battery, I got a two pin plug logo instead.  Anyhow after 10mins the phone still on charge seemed to go back to normal and the lightening strike appeared.

So I think it was a case of the perfume evaporating with all the grime that was probably creating a resistance, tricking the phone into thinking that a dodgy (low volt) charge was being used.  I had ordered a new connector which I guess would have also fixed it.

Anyhow at least I have a working phone with a brand new battery in it. I hope this helps someone save two days of frustration.

I had dropped my iPod in my cereal bowl on Monday and exactly after I put it in some rice.

After when it was all dried out I plugged I in and it started charging, but not until after I unplugged it showed up on the screen "charging is not supported with this accessory" even though it WASN'T plugged in to anything! It's bugging onto no end so if anyone can help it will be greatly appreciated!

The moisture caused some unidentifed internal damage, or your dock connector is dirty or damaged.

I have a similar issue. Running an IPad mini on iOS 6.1.3. I have two USB cables, two wall chargers and two car chargers.  Both cables work with both wall chargers and charging is not an issue.  However, neither cable will work with the car charger, nor through the USB ports on my pc.  I get the "Charging is not supported with this accessory". Have already tried the Airplane "off", switch it off, etc to no avail.  The car chargers both charge my Ipod Tuch running on iOS 6.1.3, so I can't understand why it won't for the Ipad.

Does anyone have a foolproof method if getting this working?

This is usually a hardware problem; dirt moisture or a bent pin in the dock connector on the bottom of the phone. It doesn't take much dirt to "fool" the phone into thinking there's a bad connection.

In most cases "charging is not supported" is not realted to dirt btw.

It is really OS tricks - probably afer abovementioned update iDevices require more power (more precise) from charger to recognize it as "supported" .. I dont know.

In my case iPhone 4 is no more recognizing car charger and stero box as valid chargers.

Original wall charger and charging from PC/laptop are OK(original cables).

I have found out that I still can trick my iPhone to accept the same car charger, for that I need to plug/unplug it up to 10 times until my iPhone agrees to cooperate, in 1/2 h it can suddenly again change its mind and refuse charging, then I do the same procedure again.

Maybe the car charger is not 100% up to iPhone 4 standarts, I am not sure, but as others stated - it started right after the iOS update, also my frends say the same.

Who knows - maybe Apple just fixed some forgoten "safety" feature and now it works as supposed, but still I find it disturbing.

    Cheers

    P.S.

Heard someone suggesting to clean contacts with parfume - not the best idea.

Parfume is 70-80% alcohol, but it contains also some oils in it (fragrance)

If possible -  get clean alcohol.

Ok i have had a good look at this thread with interest as my iphone 4 started this yesterday afternoon, i have tried all things which have been suggested on here and you tube with no luck. I decided to take it down to my local market in Birmingham UK this morning and get a little more input. The bloke on the market put his finger on it straight away and my device was back up and running within 15 minutes, the answer was simple NEW BATTERY.

    Price £20

    Hope this helps !!!

This worked for me using Win 7:

    Turn on computer.

Connect iphone to usb port on the back of the computer (won’t work on front ones).

    Error message on iphone.

    Put computer in sleep mode.

Error message goes and iphone charges normally, with a nice green battery charging.

I just got this on my new iPhone. I think it has to do with how the USB is connected. I had the phone plugged in through a Rocketfish USB hub, and at the same time two older iPods. I removed the iPods and plugged in the iPhone diectly to my PC instead of through the hub, and the error message stopped. I'm going to guess its a hub issue since I've had problems in the past with my old iPod Classic and sometimes with the iPod 4g when connected through the hub. They would sometimes go unnoticed by Windows; they would charge but wouldn't be seen by iTunes. Once they were directly connected everything was just fine.

With the hub - sure thing -> 5v and 500mA are shared between all consumers, 3 of them will have realy low amps on each and eventually fail.
