Q: No Volume Control on new Apple TV

Just bought a new Apple TV, but one thing is realllllllyyy bothering me. I noticed i can't control the volume of it via, apple remote that comes with the product or via Remote app for my iphone and ipad... Really *****.... I have to use my TV remote for that. Am I missing something here or did they take that feature out, cause I was able to on my old apple tv. Also If i stream music to it from my mac i can't stop the music using regular remote.. Just pain in the butt and inconsistencies...

Anyone ?

Whatever dude. Direct or not all I know is it works under the setup I've described. Honestly I don't care how or what gadget is doing it. Done here.

This thread had to do with direct control. You are the one who came here trying to contest the notion that it wasn't possible. Giving false information just confuses other users.

Which is fine Drew, it's just not overly helpful to most, as that's not the typical use case.

The majority of people will have their Apple TV 2/3 connected to their TV or Stereo amp.

The Apple TV 1 allowed volume control (which is where the expectation comes from).

It is true that typically other outboard components like DVD and cable boxes also don't have volume control, rather its controlled by the TV or Stereo remote.

The difference is that those all involve video. You don't need Apple remote volume control because its assumed you'll always be in the room to view the video.

Not so with audio from an Apple TV (podcasts or music).

thats where you need an out of room remote volume.

You didn't need to kludge with an airport express and powered speakers with the Apple TV 1.

So having iTunes Match support in the Apple TV is essentially wasted effort and not going to be used as often as iTunes Match on an iOS device air playing to the Apple TV, merely so that there's volume control.

You can't really know what the common use scenario is and there's no use going off on another tangent. The point was that its not possible. If you want to provide feedback directly as far as volume control you are free to do so

I Think you're confused as to who's saying what now vazandrew. Re-read the last two posts, and what's being replied to whom.

Sorry about that. It's been a long night and you're right I didn't look at the username of the last post. I still think that if you want to provide that feedback you should do so directly.

    Hi,

I just received my AppleTV and was frustrated not to find a way to adjust the volume.

Is there a plan by Apple to correct this or should I send the device back ?

    Thanks !

If the only thing that interests you on the Apple TV is a volume control, then yes send it back and pay your restocking fee.

Nothing to pay to send it back ... Amazon in Europe is perfect for testing and sending back bad devices ...

For sure this ATV looks good but when I watch a video sent from my iphone and cannot adjust the volume then I just feel there is something wrong with the device.

    Best regards

If there's no restocking fee, that's even better.

You can adjust the volume with the TV remote in the same way you can do when you put a quiet DVD in your DVD player, which also doesn't have it's own volume control.

Thanks for the advise but I have a Dreambox as sat receiver connected to a wired network that can get sat channels and read HD medias stored on a NAS ... External player is no more needed.

This Dreambox can do volume control and with only 1 remote I control all my home cinema.

Now with this ATV the idea was to play videos catched with the iphone camera on the TV and due to the hi-tech and quality of Apple devices, I could not imagine this simple function is not implemented.

    Regards.

I'm sure most of you want to change volume when watching programs.  I'm sure plenty of you know this already, but if you are playing music from your computer to your Apple TV, there is a volume on troll for tat.  Just did it.  It will even let you pay it through your Apple TV and your computer speakers simultaneously.  It will even let you control the volume of each of them separately while the sound comes out of both.

There is a very simple work around. You can train your tv remote to operate the appletv. Go to settings/remotes it's very easy. I've set the navigation wheel up. Allows you to operate everything from one remote. We have a Bravia TV. When you want to navigate the tv options the wheel switches back.   Simple and easy. Probably works for the Sony iPhone remote as well. Haven't tried it yet

I couldn't agree more. It is amazing that this is Apple's entry into the brave new world of digital media players, isn't it? What the cuss! I've been an Apple zealot since the mid-1980s, and still am, but this little box is the proverbial turd in the puchbowl. No volume control of it's white hot optical output (I'm plugged into high end computer speakers with no remote control, so thanks Apple!), it refuses under any circumstances to log on to my YouTube account (but not using an old Boxee Box sitting right beside it), the Netflix streaming is dodgy (but not using an old Boxee Box sitting right beside it). Combined with it's inability to play existing local media off of network storage and wow! I think they are still back at the hobby stage. Peel away the beautiful GUI and it's just crap.

A DVD player and other media players wouldn't have volume control either. The YouTube issue would have to do with how the account was set up, contact Google. If having issues with Netflix then create a separate post and clearly explain what you are experiencing, if you wish to receive help.

You can stream content off network storage if pointed to iTunes or through airplay.
