This is possibly a permissions problem.
Right-click on your main iTunes folder, or the media folder if separate, and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.

Hi - thanks! I am working on a macbook pro so....when I go to the media folder (which is separate) and right click I do not have a properties option. Do you know where I would go to check these permissions on my mac?

Ah, this is the iTunes for Windows forum, I missed the clues in your post.
I don't know if the Mac version has the same issue when moving drives between systems, but if it does Get Info on the folder is probably where to go to tweak things.
