It depends entirely on what email service you use. What is the domain of your email address — the part after the @ sign, for example gmail.com or sbcglobal.net?
Based on that, we can search for the proper SMTP settings.

I use gmail so what settings do I need to use on my iphone 4 to be able to send and receive e-mails when away from home?

Should be the standard Gmail settings, then: smtp.gmail.com
These settings will be configured automatically for you if you go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars > Add Account > Gmail. Then enter your login info.

Mine is ca.rr.com. I have no problem at home on my Time Warner Internet provider. But when away from home, ie, a hotel internet provider, I can receive but not send. Do I need to change the POP settings? They are pop-server.ca.rr.come. Outgoing is smtp-server.ca.rr.com
