Q: sync without iCloud?

After I have installed Mountain Lion, I have had a number of sync issues via iTunes and for a while I thought these were the same reasons I could not sync my notes from my iPhone with the fancy new application on my Macbook.....until I came across this article informing me that it is no longer supported in Mountain Lion(!!!!): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4191  (relevant part half way down under Syncing Notes with iTunes and OS X Mountain Lion v10.8)

I am a traditionalist when it comes to privacy and data security. I like to keep my data on my hardware behind firewall, only upload data onto the web that I genuinly want to share with others (...even to the point of using POP mail account). I have no intention to use iCloud (it seems I am not alone in this, sure you all read the comments by Steve Wozniak http://www.techradar.com/news/networking/routers-storage/apple-co-founder-thinks -the-cloud-will-be-horrendous-1091188).

The way things go, I will end up with 6 different Mac devices at home that will stop talking to each other unless I feed all the data into the cloud.

Does anyone know a way to sync everything just on your home network, without having to upload stuff to the web? Why cannot we have our own homeCloud? Any suggestions welcome (including from Apple)......Hope I will not have to abandon my Mac devices and consider (dare I even say) Windows!?

    Hello!

How to sync contacts, calendar and notes with cable - Just went through this with tech support.

Step 1.  On iphone go to -settings - icloud - delete the account if you have one, do nothing if you don't.

Step 2. connect iphone to Mac USB cable - go to iTunes - locate device and select it - on Summary click on Backup -This computer

Step 3. Click on Info tab - Select Sync contacts and Sync Calendars - de-select sync mail accounts - click on Sync button on bottom of window.

Step 4. Verify on phone if contacts have appeared (you don't need to disconnect the cable) - if they have,

Step 5. Select Sync Mail accounts and choose accounts to add to iphone - sync again.

Hope I didn't forget any steps, you should be ready to go, iCloud free and happy. It worked for me.

    Good luck!

    Hello rydl,

Just tried your fix, it worked, sort of, for my Notes - all my notes on my iPad/iPhone appeared in Notes on the iMac. However when I wrote a new note on my iMac and went through the process again the note didn't appear on my iPad or iPhone. Also tried the opposite, writing a new note on iPad and going through the process again, new note not there on iMac.

Incidentally, I'd not thought to check my iCloud settings, I found that an account had already been filled in with my details but not activated, the assumption being that of course I'd be using iCloud, no thanks. That acc is now deleted.

So its back to the drawing board until the notes issue is fixed.

BTW its a curious 'fix', why does deselecting/reselecting mail accounts cause notes to appear on my iMac? Even if only partially.

    Oh Rydl...

You got me all excited!!!  I have been having such trouble syncing with my MissingSync by Mark Space (I withdraw my advocacy of this solution), but again, a dead end!

Notes and Tasks requires the Cloud to sync.  Calendar and contacts works via cable but not Notes and tasks.  Turning off the iCloud account and turning it back on causes your data to automatically be sent to the Cloud again!  Again, there is our data, on the Cloud, not in our control and, via the terms of having the iCloud account, not your proprietary data any more!

    Nice try but no cigar!

Is there no one out there that can program, that can take the existing programs, and add the USB or WiFi link to syncing?  I'd be interested in seeing if we can put a group of us together to PAY someone to fix this!  I'd pay!

You could always stand up your own IMAP and CalDAV servers on your own network and use them.  If you have a spare Mac, you could put OS X Server on it, it's only $29 on top of Mountain Lion.

    Not that's an idea!!!

We could use that as backup / RAID also couldn't we?!?!

Not anything that's specifically targeted for this.  You'd need to set up the mail (IMAP) server and the WebDAV server, though:

    http://krypted.com/mac-os-x-server/a-guide-to-using-mac-os-x-server-10-8/

It wouldn't be super complicated but it might be a bit finicky, and you might need to get the DNS service set up as well.

Ok, when tech support worked me through this, the email accounts HAD to be turned off for ithe calendar and contacts to sync for the first time. Afterwards, I went back, sync'd again and chose my email accounts and sync'd them as well. The notes are connected to the mail and they will only sync if mail account is not also synced. They will show up on the notes (look for the arrows back or forth) and not on the email.

It seems you can not sync by cable if you have an existing iCloud account. You have to delete it. Remove contents first, and you can always create another one later if you wish.

Best of luck, you are on your own.

    rydl,

Can you go to the apple menu at the top left of your screen, click on "About this Mac" and post what version of OSX you're using?

    ALCON:

Just had an exchange with MarkSpace regarding the issues that I was having using MissingSync and Fliq Notes and Tasks to avoid the Cloud issues.

At the end of the day, I would come home and plug in my iPhone and charge while I synced the day's events.  What it appears is that conflicts were occuring while I was plugged in and MissingSync was trying to use both USB and WiFi to sync.  Last night I cleared all duplicates and synced via WiFi only and it appears to be working.

It is convienent to have my iPhone pluged-in, charging and hit the sync at the same time.  However, I have put the iPhone on a seperate powersupply and disconnected the USB and will sync via WiFi only for a while.  I'll report here how it works.

Fliq Notes and Tasks work well when the sync works, and without the Cloud, although it takes a seperate sync opperation.

This is critical for my propriatary, legal and sensitive information.  I wish someone would make it a one button opperation, but Fliq appears to be a reasonable patch.

Thanks BruceH re MissingSync and Fliq Notes and Tasks, this looks like a viable solution to the sync without iCloud problem. I might give this a try, at about $20 its not to painful an alternative.

I didn't see this suggested, but this seems like a logical thing to be able to do: is there a way to use local file sharing to publish calendars?

That way our data stays local rather than having to go from Alaska to America and then back to Alaska (roundtrip of at least 3000 miles) in order to span a distance of five feet.  I freely admit local sharing is a only some three million times more efficient than a remote solution, but perhaps that meager gain is worth some small amount of effort?

I have made some attempts to direct the Publish URL to a local shared directory, but haven't found the right incantation yet ("error -1007" not withstanding).

Or is this issue not susceptible to 'relentless application of logic'?

AkChap, loved your post, totally broke me up.

Apple insularity on this and other current usability topics is typical, like talking to someone who's OD'd on novocain.
