Hello, i have been searching this forum and cant seem to find the answer i am looking for. Here is my situation and if someone can tell me what to do i would seriously appreciate it.

Here is my situation... I am new to Apple and I recently bought 2 Macbook Pros - one for me and the other for my wife. I also bought a 2TB Time Capsule which I use for both our macs. I have all my photos and videos imported into iphoto and my wife wants access to 2 very large albums and possibly more in the future. I know i can share the 2 albums but if my laptop is not available she cant view them so this is not going to work. I know i can also copy all the photos and videos to her mac but then my time capsule will be filled with a TON of wasted space due to the duplicates in each of our backups. Then, when i update the albums what do we do?

I am stumped!

Thanks in advance to anyone who can guide me in the right direction.

Most simple way: put the Library on an external disk and simply plug it into whichever Mac wants it.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

    1. Quit iPhoto

    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.

    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.

    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

    Regards

Does this mean iPhoto has to live on external drive? I definitely don't want that. Kind of defeats the whole purpose.

No, it means the Library does. I'm not sure how that defeats any purpose. Perhaps you might explain.

Thats what i meant, the library has to live on the external drive. To clarify, you are telling me to put iphoto library on external drive and delete the library on my macbook? Then my wife and i share the external drive? If this is what you mean then yes it defeats the purpose of mobility, simplicity and redundancy. Why would i want to hang an external drive off of my laptop to work with photos?

If i copy them to her computer can i exclude them in time machine backups? I believe that answer is no.

Can she access my library on the Time Capsule backup? I believe this answer is no also.

Sure you can - in the TM preferences you can exclude any file, folder or drive from backup

No - You can only access the TM backup using the TM program

Larry thanks for the response! So i just peeked in there and i can see the exclusions, am i able to drill down to the two events in her library that i dont want backed up or is it just the library itself? To me this seems like the most logical way to do this without wasting a ton of space on my capsule! and not using external devices. So then moving forward anything i import from the camera she wants i can just import into the same event and it wont back it up still? Sorry for all the questions, im chronic with my media!

You can not eliminate events - only files or folders (the iPhoto library is a package  which is a special folder)
