When I add keywords to my photos, I do the same thing every time:  I type it in the keyword section under the Info pane, and hit Return.  (Just like the instructions say.)

However, half the time they disappear.  Why?    Having to re-enter the keywords is getting very annoying.   If the program accepts them the other half of the time, and even re-sorts them alphabetically upon hitting Return, why do they disappear the other half of the time?

    What is your iPhoto version?

The keywords definitely should stay. You may have a corrupted iPhoto library that needs repairing.

As a test: Create a new iPhoto library, and test, if you have the same problem with lost keywords.

To create a new iPhoto Library for testing, hold down the options-key "⌥" while double-clicking iPhoto to launch and select "Create New". The same way you can switch back to your regular library.

If it works well in a new library, use the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools to repair the permissions and the iPhoto Library. If repairing does not help, back up and rebuild the library,

see this document on how to repair and rebuild: iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library

A way to more quickly add keywords to photos is to bring up the Keyword pane (Command+K) while viewing the thumbnails.

    iPkeywordpane.PNG

Select a photo and click on the keyword(s) you want to add to that photo. The keyword(s) will turn blue when added to the photo.  Select the next photos and repeat.

Sometimes the thumbnail rebuild will take more than one attempt to do the job fully.
