Why does Safari randomly choose not to open all my previously open windows? Sometimes up to half the tabs/windows show up BLANK.

Often, I'll see the headings written in the tabs in the toolbars, but when I go to them, they are blank, and I must re-enter the page name manually, do a search, then load the correct one. Other times it will just be blank (usually when it's a single window, since the page name is not in the tab toolbar. WHY is it doing this?

Will clearing past history remove the ability to open a window that is open when I close Safari?

    Safari version?

    Startup in Safe Mode.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564

    Empty Caches.

Reset Safari. No need to reset "saved names and passwords".

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type of copy paste the following:

    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.

Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

Appreciate your advice Carolyn, but it needs more context.

What data is being lost with this method?  Image caches?  URL's  Browser history?  Cookies? Autofills/Passwords?

A user should really understand what they are throwing away and if it can be replaced.

    Image caches.

That's what the Caches > Safari holds.  Nothing else.

Upon Restart of Safari, a new folder is automatically produced.

The old blockage of images is deleted, and problems like this can disappear.

Perhaps getting a basic book on computing would help you, as well.

Question: Is going to the cache folder & deleting, any different than using the Safari drop-down window "Empty Cache" or using Cocktail or Onyx, etc, to Delete Browser caches?
And how would emptying the cache correct the issue of empty windows from opening, instead of the previously open ones?  I do empty the cache, regularly...

Context = this problem has nothing to do with images.  The blank pages contain no content at all, no source code.  There is simply nothing to reload.

They have headers only, which safari seems to remember separately as tab info.  The rest is gone.

I've deleted caches through prefs and developers tools.  All the other tabs refresh.  The "random", ones stripped of their URLs, do not.

So what is causing this?  Is there a pattern?  Why are only certain pages effected (some identical to the healthy tab next to it)?  Are they cloned tabs?  Is it plug-in related?  Google searches?  Old searches?  Why are they flushed from recent history?   Does it relate to icloud synching errors?  Is the content actually lost during "sleep" mode or application launch?

Has anyone really posted a fix for this?

Saxman is asking exactly the right questions.

Saxman, do you keep multiple pages of multiple tabs open every day? I do. Are some of them reduced in the dock?  Are they google search results?  New or reloaded every day?

Next time this happens to you, check to see if that blank page is still in your deep history list.  (We know that "reload tab" does not work).   In the history menu, choose "show top sites".  Then click the history button to view all your pages in cover-flow view.  Is the url info still there?   (You can use the search function here as well).

Do any of the questions I've posted ring a bell?

NOHUHU,  Yes, I do have multiple pages of tabs, as well as some with just one url in the window. I don't keep any reduced in the dock, they are all just on the screen. Once in a while they are Google search results, and they tend to re-open ok. It's hard to know if a blank window is in my "deep history" list or not, if I don't know what is supposed to be in the window. If I did, it wouldn't be as much an issue, much like the tabs with only the headers, at least I can manually find the page that was open. When it's totally blank, then I'm in the dark...

OK, I did the Top SItes then history, and I see a lot of those windows in history only show an image of a gear, and some have a gear & a lock. What's up with that I wonder? And yes, the urls are still there even if no images are...

Sax, those locks are for https: pages, which reflect secured sites, (like this forum, various retail and other password protected sites, even some google searches).  But they should all launch and refresh, including all images.

The cover-view display includes both page title and full url, so if your "blank" page still has a tab title, you can look it up with the search function.  Using keywords works great.  Since your favorite tabs tended to be reloaded and used every day, they should be listed here several times.  Chronologically, in fact.

So far, every history page I have opened loads completely, and I think I found the ones I needed, so you may still have "cookie crumbs" laying around that will bring those "mystery" tabs back to life.

Until apple gits its chit together,..  (Lemme know if this helps)

    UPDATE - 1 week later,..

The random blank tabs started again, after accumulating 30-40 tabs and letting the the box sleep (overnight, I think).  Other than their titles, the empty tab's memory was wiped clean, and only a blank Google prompt remained.

The good news is, the links were still in "history" and I was able to search, locate and access them with the "cover-view" approach I described before.

So give it a try, next time your tabbed websites go AWOL.

That they are still in History is good, however, when blank windows open, there is no title shown, so I have no idea what page to search for in History. Sometimes I can find the list of tabs that opened up the last time I opened Safari, but,..... if the blank pages first were opened after Safari was last open, then I wouldn't be able to, plus, trying to cross-reference say, 40 or more tabs that may be open, with the list of those in History, would be very cumbersome & time consuming.....

i have the same problem, all my tab open blank e without url.i try that TBS but it doesn't work for me, my tabs continue to open blank!

    Someone can help me??

Fabbro, Apple has not acknowledged this bug and there is no fix yet, unless clearing your image cache works for you.  For me, it had no effect.  Turning off 3rd party plug ins did not fix it either.

Last week, I cleared all my tabs and started fresh.  It took about a week for the problem to return (with around 30 tabs left open, day to day).  Everyday, on restart, it seems to leave more and more blank.  It's random so far.

All you can do is find them in history, (where they are saved) and reload them.  If you have more than a few, it's a PIA, but it works.

Saxman, my safari retains the window title and displays this on the tab itself (truncated).  If you see it too, just hold your mouse over the tab for a bit and it will display the whole title.  The titlebar of your open window shows it as well.  Search your browsing history using key words from that title and you will be able to locate the correct URL and reload the page.  Almost certainly it will be in yesterday's history folder.  If you discover a faster method, let us know.

If anyone wants to cheat this bug, save your healthy tabs as a folder of bookmarks and reload them all at once, should any go blank.

Before shutting down Safari, right-click on one of tabs and select "Add Bookmark for these "x" Tabs".  Save each open page of tabs to the same bookmark folder and you'll have them ready to reload in a flash.

There was an Apple software update posted yesterday for security and safari that might resolve this issue, though I'm skeptical.

I've experienced this problem too, but something very specific triggered it. Hopefully knowing the trigger will be helpful in some way.

The trigger was clearing my history.

I cleared my history. My tabs failed to load their web pages the next time Safari was opened.

More specifically: I cleared my history. My open tabs (13 tabs) remained unchanged while Safari remained opened. I  opened a new tab in the same window as the other tabs and watched a video (PBS video). Then I closed Safari the same way I always do. The next time I opened Safari, all the tabs appeared either as a new "Top Sites" tab, or a tab displaying a blank page and the title of the website in the tab. Very frustrating.

Yes, if you clear the history, and it includes the current tabs you have open, it won't "remember" them, and you'll get blank pages. This itself is a bug, for some other browsers still retain your last session even if all the history has been cleared, but not Safari....  But NOHUHU, when blank tabs open, SOME of them will still have the title of the page at the top, and I can type it in search, and find the page again, however, some, at random won't, they just open with a blank page, and a blank address bar, so there's no clue as to what the tab was supposed to be, which is quite frustrating...
