SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER in Large size.
This will produce a movie in h.264
In iDVD, open the Media Browser and navigate to this movie in the iMovie Projects section. Drag it into your iDVD project.

is the Media Browser the same thing as the Media Pane? just the normal place where you would find movies, photos, music, (lower right-hand corner of iDVD screen) and drag them into the DVD project template?
technically, i'm curious as to whether this is a different process from simply asking iMovie to burn a DVD through the share/iDVD menu.

Technically, it is a different process.
When you use SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE or SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER, iMovie creates you finished movie in H.264. When you use SHARE to IDVD, iMovie creates an intermediate movie for use only in iDVD that is in DV codec (or AIC codec if the original footage was HD).
Intuitively, it would seem that staying in DV would give better results, but my experience has been the opposite.
Here is a quick and dirty video showing the use of the Media Browser in iDVD. I guess you could call it a pane.
