I have a late-2007 MacBook Pro running OS 10.8.3. I also have an NEC display connected.

Earlier when I woke the MBP from sleep mode, both the MBP screen & the NEC display were completely black. I shut down the MBP, waited a few minutes & restarted. It seemed to restart fine (i.e. audible "chime"); but both screens were still black. I disconnected the AC power cord & restarted. Same problem.

I then started it in Safe Mode (i.e. holding down the Shift key). After over 3 minutes holding down the Shift key, the screens were still black. I tried restarting in Safe Mode with & without the AC power cord connected.

I would really appreciate any suggestions/ideas anyone might have. I really need to get the MBP up & running again a.s.a.p. Thank you so much!

It sounds like your GPU has failed.   A trip to the Apple store genius bar is in order for a definitive diagnosis.

    Ciao.

See Article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377 MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues

These computers were manufactured between approximately May 2007 and September 2008

I was afraid that might be the case. I will follow up on a definitive diagnosis.

However, in the meantime, if indeed the GPU is toast, I will need to determine if replacing the GPU is cost effective considering the age of my MBP. This engenders a couple of questions:

    1.  Is replacing the GPU in this machine managable for myself? I did replace the internal hard drive which was not a big deal.

    2.  Any recommendations on a replacement GPU, as well as a purchasing source?

    Thank you!

If your model MBP qualifies per the link I posted, the repairs will be FREE.  You need to Call Apple Customer Relations - 1-800-767-2275.  Ask politely & firmly that you want to be transferred to Customer Relations.  Refer the KB Article to them & your symptoms.

    GOOD LUCK!

Baby Boomer: If indeed the GPU has failed, I will definitely contact Apple Customer Service in spite of the fact that the extended warranty period has lapsed. It never hurts to ask.

However, I'm trying to evaluate my different options if Apple denies my request; hence my question about replacing the GPU.

    Thank you.

The GPU is an integral part of the MBP logic board.  What this means is that the entire board must be replaced if the GPU has failed.  It is an expensive repair.

The genius bar technicians will be able to determine if that is indeed the problem and the cost associated with it.

    Ciao.

Ogelthorpe:  As I suspected. Well, if the repair is not cost-effective, I think I might have an excuse for a new machine.

    Thank you.
