I bought an iPhone 4 in January 2012. After seven months, I had the same problem: it died with a full battery and despite trying everything, it would not turn on. I returned it to the Apple Store, they sent me a new one for free. Now, eight months later, I am having the exact same problem with the new one. Gladly I had the idea of pluging it to my computer, holding its two buttons for some seconds and it turned back on. I disabled iCloud, as I read in another thread that it might be the problem. Hopefully it will not happen again, it will be the second time that I am having the same issue.

If you hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons for 10-20 seconds (until an Apple logo appears) the phone will reboot. Just like a computer.
You should do this periodically, whether it is working or not. Like once a week.
The iPhone is not really a phone; it is a very powerful pocket sized computer that can also make phone calls. And like any computer it needs to be rebooted periodically. And like any computer it will crash occasionally. Just like your Windows PC or your Mac will.

My iphone just went blank and in a "On' state as you can see the background bright light.
Tried all methods mentioned here, "Hold Power & Home buttons...and connect to Itunes etc"
Doesn't work for me.
What else can I do?
Before this happend, I'm able to put it in a restore mode but didn't proceed with that as I didn't want to wipe out all
my database and apps and update the IOS with the restore pathway.
Anyone here facing similar situation and have resolve the issue, please share your experience and solutions.
Thanks a million!

Thank you! I was devastated when my phone would not turn on. Plugging it in to the computer and holding the home+sleep buttons together for 10+ seconds worked a treat. So happy not to lose everything.

I just got an iPhone 4 from Verizon, and I left it off of charger over night, it was about 70%. By next morning, it was off. I held down Home and Power buttons for a while and then it came back on and was around 30%. Very strange!!! It's done this probably 2-3 times since, and if it does it one more time I'll just take it back to Verizon. I really love this phone and I know Apple can do better than that. I have all faith in Apple.

Just experienced the same problem last night.....one minute phone was on, the next it was "dead" even though battery life was about 75%. Thank goodness for this thread as I was about to head out to the Sprint store on Memorial Day. Any way, I was able to reboot by holding both buttons (home & power/sleep) for 10 seconds and without being plugged into computer or wall charger!
BTW, the Find My iPhone app will NOT work during this time (shut down/dead) as has been suggested in other forums.

thanks for the tip. I have the i4S, and I was about to go to the AT&T store and rant about my phone, but you saved me a trip. After holding the power and home buttons simultaneously, it came on instantly. However, I do not know what makes it shut off.

However, I do not know what makes it shut off.
The same thing that makes Windows stop and display a Blue Screen of Death, or Mac OS or Linux to terminate with a kernel panic, or an IBM mainframe to sysabend. iOS crashed.
