epson printer software update 2.14 killed my printer

On Mac OS X 10.7.5 - after epson printer software update 2.14 my 9890 started printing images "smeared" out of register across the page.

Over an hour with Epson tech ended with trashing the /Library/Printers/EPSON folder and downgrading to the previous driver. This fixed the 9890 but left my R1900 disabled. R1900 software is no longer available as a stand-alone install - only through Sofware Update. But that will kill my 9890.

Epson tech said it's Apple's fault and they need to fix it.

Apple, where's the fix?

Same here on OS X 10.6.8: Epson printer software update 2.14 made prints on my SP9890 appear 'encrypted'.

After trashing /Library/Printers/EPSON/ and installing latest driver from Epson everything was well again. I will try to avoid future printer software updates from Apple - never change a running system.

I had the same problem and after untold hours working with Apple & Epson we got to the problem with the Apple software update 2.14. I was told I had to decide if I wanted my 9900 to work or my office printer (Workforce 610) to work. I was incredulous that I would be forced to make this choice but of course chose to get my 9900 back up and running. This fix was given to me 3 weeks ago tomorrow and we still no resolution from Apple / Epson? Are you kidding me? I am considering throwing my Epson 610 in the trash and buying another brand of office printer so I will have no conflict with my 9900. Seems like a pretty stupid solution I must admit.

I called Epson back again on Friday and got a horrible run-around. The guy from the Pro Graphics group (techs for the professional series printers) insisited I needed to talk to the consumer printers group. Once I got to them it was clear they had no clue about this issue. I left the phone totally frustrated and angry. I ended up emailing a very capable guy from the Pro Graphics group I had worked with 3 weeks ago and he was nice enough to reply. The answer however was there is still no fix to the Apple update. At t his point I am not sure how to know if the update has been fixed. The message I get from Epson is just keep checking back. The problem is that it seems few at Epson are aware of the problem so you have to go through a long explanation only to hope you find someone that is aware.

Nothing like running a printing company and telling your customers you cannot print their invoice because your printer doesn't work! Thanks Apple for the quick fix on this!

As a side note it also breaks Epson Perfection 1250 and 1260 scanners

I've filed a bug with bugreporter.apple.com which is for registered Apple Developers, since the forums are not a surefire way to let Apple know... since daveohl called Applecare that means they know about the printer issue, let's hope v2.15 comes out soon

This thread might offer you a solution:

Trashing the /Library/Printers/EPSON folder and reinstalling the latest drivers for the prographics printers has worked for my big printers and left my small r1900 disabled. I talked with Epson tech again yesterday and the reply was "... there is no fix, and Apple is such a big company we don't have anyway of knowing IF or when this will be fixed... we can't make them (Apple) fix it."

I took care of my R1900.... it was pretty low on ink... so I threw it in the dumpster (for recycling electronics). I don't know how many "gloss optimizer" cartridges I've gone through just from cleaning the head. I never print glossy.... I have gloss optimizer turned OFF. I'm looking at small canons to replace the R1900.

Epsons print nice... but there are some things they don't get or care about.... as long as you keep buying their ink.

Excuse me for diverting into a rant.

Joel Bruner1, thanks for filing that bug report.

No reason to apologize for your "rant" Larry. I think there are many of us with disabled printers right now as a result of Apple's 2.14 upgrade. Throwing a small printer in a dumpster so that you can keep your large format printer running is not an illogical decision if it keeps you up and running. I am stunned by the message from Epson that I need to decide which printer I want to work, my 9900 or my Workforce 610. I am a pretty committed Apple user but this shows you what happens when companies get so large and successful that big problems like this to us end users are but background "noise" in the larger challenges of running the company and hitting quarterly expectations with the analysts.

I am coming up now on 1 month since my Epson office printers and scanners were disabled when I had to pull them off of my Mac Pro desktop so that my Stylus Pro 9900 would continue to function. I am now having to email invoices and other documents to myself where I then open them and print them from my laptop to my office printers. This was acceptable for me for about 24 hours while I assumed Apple would fix this. Now a month later I am looking for a very large dumpster. If Apple hopes to keep customer loyalty they must listen to the cries of their best customers.

I noticed a similar discussion going on with the Yahoo wide format printers forum. Some other guys have lost their wide format printers with the latest Apple update 2.14. They then stripped out all of the Epson drivers that Apple bundles together in their updates and ran with only their large format printers, totally giving up their office printers for the past month. Same frustration levels as they wait for a fix. One guy was able to download an earlier version of the Apple update that was used on Apple 10.6 and restore use of his printers. I think this may be the best solution since it doesn't appear that Apple is really working on this. Any thoughts from the rest of you? Dave

Dave,

I think you're right, resorting to an older version may be our best solution until someone realizes they messed up. Apple blames Epson for writing the drivers. Epson blames Apple for the software update. I've been on the phone with both companies for what seems like days...

Where I'm stumped is there are 4 people in my office, 3 running the latest OS X, and 1 (who doesn't like change) still running Lion. But all of us are having these issues. Desktop printer works fine, but our 7890 prints blurry. Then we fix permissions as stated earlier and the 7890 works great, but desktop printers are useless.

Very frustrating!!

Yeah, it "broke" my Epson Perfection 1250 scanner, too. I use Image Capture, but now when I run it, the green light on the front flashes a few times, turns red, and Image Capture says "scanner not available".

Somebody has to smart enough to fix this, right? Those with the knowledge to fix it have a bit of a responsibility to fix it, ifyouknowwhatImean ...

Has there been any new developments with this "broken" Apple update? I have been sitting on the sidelines now for many weeks looking for Apple to step up and get this fixed. My 9900 is working but 4 other Epson printers and scanners are still down. Have others of you gone back and downloaded older versions of the drivers to get running again? This is beyone frustrating.

I talked with Epson once again to see if there had been any updates. They gave me this to try and so far it seems to be working.

1. Apple-->System preferences-->Print and Scan

2. Select your printer (mine is a 7890)

3. Click the Options and Supplies button

4. Click on the drivers tab

5. Change the "Process Job by Printer", from "on" to "off"

6. Restart your printing program and try to print

What you'll need is the old Epson Scanner.app version 5.3.15

Now, the legit way might be to just reinstall the OS and roll back...

but who has time for that!

So I've uploaded it here:

Epson Scanner.app (v5.3.15): http://we.tl/0wYDTatCKQ

This driver will also work for 10.6.8 (have not tested on 10.7 but seems to reason that if it works on 10.6 and 10.8, 10.7 will be fine)

You might need to reboot after putting the file in /Library/Image Capture/Devices/ overwriting the newer app that is messing up your life right now...

If you don't want to reboot, check Activity Monitor for the Epson Scanner process and kill it, then make sure to unplug your scanner and plug back in. Once it's in the red light state a power cycle is the only way to get it to be recognized again by the system

Sorry don't have an Epson printer to find out what files are needed for that... but hope this helps the scanner folks!

THANKS IMACMOMMY! After 2 1/2 months without my office printers I finally have a solution. My 9900 and all of my other printers have decided to play together again. I can't tell you how pleased I am! It is hard to believe that this single check box was the solution to this problem. The guys at Epson said one of their techs stumbled upon this solution by playing around with the software. All is good again. Thanks! Dave

ps here is the post that MacMommy provided that appears to be the solution.
