Hello,

I am using Apple Mail with GMail and I notice that Apple Mail quits sometimes slowly.

In activity window I see that Mail wants to empty the trash although empty trash is set to never.

Do you have a solution?

    Hello dom_beta,

Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

I understand you are having issues with the Mail application unexpectedly quitting. When troubleshooting these sort of issues, I find the following article provides the best suggestions/steps toward a resolution:

Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later: Mail unexpectedly quits

    Thanks,

    Matt M.

I think dom-beta is asking why his Mail application sometimes seems to have behind the scene processes go on that causes a delay when shutting down Mail application.

    dom_beta,

There are a lot of thing that are going on in the Mail application that the user is not aware of. Sometimes there are unfinished processes or "activities" going on that a person is not aware of. This could be caused by both by the user or the server from unfinished activies. Three things to look at are: check this out - under the window menu click "activities". The second thing: would be to check the settings of how you set up your email program. This could be done by going to the system preferences and clicking the Mail, Contacts and Calendar tab. The third thing is: when the Mail application is open, use the key combination "command" and the letter "I" at the same time and checking your quota limits for each account you have.

    This is correct.

When I open the acitivity window I see sometimes a message that mail wants to empty the trash although this is set to never.

    Why is this?

I also noticed that Mail under Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" does not sometime have this problem.

oh darn everything I wrote disapeared.... I do not have a specific answer. Check the side bar, as well as the quota limits. Other than trash andn spam Google does not autodelete the email.

you should be using an Imap account unless you prefer pop. Dont forget I am in the United States. This was set up automatically when I set up my googe email account on my Mail app.

If you use the key combination "command" and "I" and go to the summary tab it should show you your accounts.

There is a good chance your settings are correct unless you manually set them up.
