I have downloaded and played a number of podcasts on my iPhone and then deleted them from iTunes.  Although the podcasts are no longer in iTunes or on the iPhone the title of the podcasts are still left on the iPhone.  I have gone to General-Usage-Podcasts but the podcasts that have been deleted are not there but the titles are shown when I open the Podcast app.

Any ideas on how to delete them?

Just posted essentially the same question above.  There doesn't appear to be a way to unsubscribe from a series on the iphone in a way that deletes it from your list of series.

Open Podcasts and go to My Podcasts. You find Edit in the upper left corner, hit and select unwanted.

    Hope it's to your help.

Thanks - I never noticed that edit button there.  In fact, I'm thinking it wasn't there in the prior version of the podcast app because I looked all over the place at that time, but whaterver.  Glad it's there.

    Yes, but....

If I've listened to my podcast and I've deleted it from iTunes, I don't want the memory of it to exist on my phone. I want it gone. I want to see the last 10 Podcasts I've downloaded on my iPhone and that's it. Is there a way to just have the stupid App not show me EVERYTHING without having to manually delete them all?

Well, I like having iTunes manage my podcasts rather than my iPhone, so at least in that scenario it works like you'd want.  When I sync to my computer, all of the listened-to podcasts are removed and any new ones that exist are predownloaded and waiting for me on my computer.  Granted, that forces me to keep ALL unplayed episodes on my computer until they are played, which I don't like.

I haven't tried managing a subscription from my iPhone by itself. I take it in that case it isn't removing listened to episodes?

Two steps. Step one, delete all the podcasts from that subscription and uncheck "subscribe". Second step, delete the Podcasts app and reinstall. All the old empty podcasts will be gone.

A bit Rube Goldberg for Apple, but it works.

This is exactly what I needed.  The edit button was hidden and I had to swipe down to revel it.

I don't understand where you are talking about? On itunes? on the phone? Where is the edit button? Also, how would you delete the Podcasts app and reinstall? Isn't it all part of itunes?

I'm terribly frustrated with not being able to manually sync my iphone the way that I did with my ipod touch since this new itunes came out.

    Thanks.

Jorf, in the Podcasts app (not itunes), on the My Podcasts screen, if you touch and pull down, an Edit button and search box appear.  Hitting the edit button enables the mode to delete an entire podcast.

Note that you can still manually sync, you just have to choose that mode in itunes.  I think the easiest way to go, however, is to just let it autosync all unplayed episodes with itunes and that automatically uploads new episodes and deletes watched ones.

    Hello red.stang

Im still puzzled and hope you can help. I am not running the podcast app, but sync all my podcasts through itunes. Mostly these are radio programmes. Some programmes obediently list only the "5 most recent". Other programmes however have lists going back several years. There does not seem to be a way to remove these old podcasts. In  previous versions of itunes I could control/click and delete, but not with this version. Can you advise?

John, I think I know what you're talking about, but I've only handled it once and it was by brute force.  I subscribed to a radio podcast in itunes that had years of history, and to get enough of the history I wanted, I had itunes "show all available episodes".  That took a long time pull down the list, but after it was done I highlighted everything I didn't want, right clicked and deleted it.  This still works in itunes 11, both shift and ctrl click - are you saying you can't highlight multiple episodes?  Anyway, after that it started downloading all the episodes left to my pc.  I set the podcast to only sync unplayed episodes and from then on I've been listening to things in chronological order.

All this worked the same regardless of whether or not I had the podcast app on my iphone, so if I understand your question I don't think it matters what you're using.  Is there a reason you're not using the podcast app though?  The only reason not to I can think of would be if you want to use playlists.  Otherwise I recommend it.  I like it better than accessing podcasts via the music app, and prefer to watch/listen to my podcasts in chronological order, which works great via the app.

    marythegreat IS great!

Your comment made me realize that there were buttons I was missing because they were at the top (hidden under the "My Podcasts" bar) -- and you have to swipe down to see them. This was driving me crazy.
