Q: I am receiving receipts for app purchases e.g. bags of gems for an app my son has but I know it's not him who's purchased the items. How can I find out what device they're being bought on? Or how do I complain about these purchases?  Thank you

I am receiving receipts from apple for bags of gems (for an app). My son has this game but I know it's not him who's buying these items.  Is there anyway I can find out who is purchasing them, say can apple know which device is being used to purchase them?  If not how do I complain about this and and alter the account - I have already changed the password! Help gratefully received, thanks

If I may ask, how do you know it's not him? Those are almost certainly in-app purchases, and easily made unless you've turned off the option to make in-app purchased in the iOS device. So how are you certain that he hasn't made these purchases?

As to your specific question, no, Apple cannot tell you what device made these purchases. It could have been done from any device that could connect to your iTunes Store account.

    Regards.

    Hi Varjak,

I know it's not him because this is the 2nd time it's happened in the last month and he had such a huge telling off last time and it turned out not to be him. I was so mad with him when the e-mail came in but the e-mail turned out to be a week after the actual purchase date.  And the purchase date, like this last time was when he was at boarding school and they're unable to download apps etc due to the strict blocks in place at their boarding house.  Plus if he had somehow found a way to do it last time, he sure as anything wouldn't have done it a 2nd time - I can promise you that!  The trouble is older boys are allowed out to town so could go to wi-fi places and I wondered if he'd shared any information he shouldn't have whether this is how it's happened.  Anyway if apple can't find out which device I guess i'll never know.  You need to punch in the passcode for any purchase right, not just for new apps??

If one of the other students, or anyone else, got access to your iTunes Store account, necessary to make any purchases, then they'd have all the information they'd need to also make in-app purchases. But an in-app purchase can only be made through the account through which the original app was purchased. Either your son bought the game (free or paid) and then shared it with someone else along with the account information (necessary to authorize the app on someone else's device), or someone else downloaded the game as well, not just made in-app purchases.

In any case, changing your iTunes Store password should now have cut off any such unauthorized activity, though of course if your son gives the new password out, you'll be back to square one.

    Regards.
