Q: iMessage on mac not working properly

Hello to the mac community!

I own an iPod touch and a MacBook pro with mountain lion.  iMessage on my iPod touch works perfectly (it always sends, always receive messages seamlessly, and all the messages are in chronological order within the conversation.) On my MacBook pro, it's all the contrary. Messages are sent only 50 percent of the time (I often get "failed to send" with an exclamation point and have to resend it. I may have o do this 3-3 times. Other times it may work in one try) Sometimes I receive messages on my mac after 15 minutes. Also, the messages on my mac are not in chronological order so I often have to look at my iPod to be able to read the conversation.

I checked. Both iPod and mac are on the same email address for iMessage. I do not get why it works perfectly on iPod and it kindda ***** on mac.

Anybody has this problem? Anybody knows how to fix the issue?

Cheers

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

    HI,

    Technically they are different apps.

The Mac version is essentially "Compatible with" the iMessage function on the iOS devices.

Ever since OS X 10.8.2 updated Messages on the Mac to version 7.0.1 and iOS got to version 6 which then linked the iPhone Numbers to the Apple IDs and "synced" across both Apple ID and iPhone Number people have been reporting the MAc version syncs are:-

    1) Slow and behind the iOS devices

    2) Sometime out of Order  (Mainly when a Chat starts on an iPhone and is then continued on a Mac but Messages has been Off line so the "sync" has to play catch up.

The sync plays out like a speeded up chat and is not "instant"

However new iMessages are instant placing things out of order.

Some people say that restarting the app does re-order the iMessages items that are in fact time stamped.

I, myself are seeing some iMessages not appearing on the Mac when conversation have been on the iPhone.

The most common is when the iPhone has been using the Mobile Phone carrier and not WiFi.

It has been a while since I have seen the red exclamation mark for an Unsent iMessage.

Currently there is no fix but we suggest letting Apple know http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html

I suggest this feedback link as Messages is built on the iChat engine.

Hey, I let Apple know. 2 weeks later, there was a Mac update. I installed he update and now the conversations are in order almost 100 percent of the time but my messages dont always send. I oftentimes get the red exclamation mark. Does somebody know if there is a cache folder I should delete or something or maybe re-install the application? (i dont know if that is possible)

    cheers

    Hi,

It is possible to reinstall but it means reinstalling the whole OS and the apps that come with it.

(It will not touch your personal stuff or third party apps you have installed).

I have had one or two iMessages from my Mac give me the red exclamation mark during at least one session.

I close down my Mac each day when I have finished with it.

I am not entirely sure that it only happens when the iMessages server is busy.

Did you ever find a solution or a cause for your problem? I have the same problem, but curiously it only happens at my house, which has slower internet than when I'm at college. I have zero iMessage problems using the college internet, but every time I go back home I start having the exact problems you describe. It's like iMessage loses its connection or something after sitting there for a few minutes, but doesn't provide any notification or attempt to reconnect. When sending a message, it will show the exclamation point because it failed, but when I click try again, it sends and then it works again for a little while.

No. the imessage on my mac is the same everywhere no matter the internet. It's true that once you are in a conversation (when iMessage gets used to send and receive "quickly") it works better.   But I still get the red exclamation point quite often when im sending something for the first time.

    I notified Apple. Let's see.

I have amazing news! The OS X 10.8.4 update, just released today, purportedly contains a fix for the out-of-order iMessages. I'm not currently home so I haven't installed it yet or tested it, but here's hoping it actually fixes it.

Installed the update yesterday (4 June) and with some exchanges between my wife and myself, I can say with certaintly, that it is not fixed. What part of this problem does Apple not understand?

A little hard when there are no changes to Messages in that Update.

Saved Chats opened when the Main Messages window has actual chat still visible....

    two versions.png

If the Save feature can't save the Chat in the "right order" then it is unlikely that the "history" feature of showing you the previous parts of the conversation are always going to be correct.

However the Combo Update page links to this

After using it, yes the out-of-order messages issue is still present. As well as the issue with iMessage not updating the current messages for long stretches of time and sometimes displaying an unsent message icon, though the update didn't say it was supposed to fix that one. I didn't think to check the version number of the messages app before and after, but I take your word for it that it didn't change.

Hey socceryo3, did you find any solution to this problem yet?

I have the exact same problem: My iMessage on my MBa is working 100% everywhere but my own appartment, which made me jump to the conclusion that it had to be something with my router or internet connection somehow, but I can't find any solution to this problem anywhere on the interwebs.

I've tried sending an email to my internet provider just now in pure desperation, but supposedly I get a mail back stating "Your internet is working fine, go cry somewhere else".

It's so frustrating! I've come accustomed to iMessage on my MBa, but it's kinda annoying when something seems to block iMessage every 5 minutes which means I have to restart the app to make it work again..

    Hi,

Did you check the Date and Time settings on the router.

Messages and any incoming Message, be it from AIM and Jabber Buddy or iMessages relies on Time Stamps.

Whilst it is clear the iMessages cannot do this properly when syncing Messages in particular it does require that the computer is set to the "right" Region and Time Zone in it's own Settings.

That fact it only happens "at Home" does suggest something about the Router.

It may be something like Daylight Saving Time if it is not actually the Region or Time Zone settings.
