Hi, is it worthy to make this upgrade?

Apparently it has many glitches.

I tried to install it doing software upgrade but it keeps telling me for a reboot and it stills shows version 10.8.3.

My mac is 3 days new and I really dont want to screw it just for an upgrade.

Tks for the help

OS X 10.8.4 contains a lot of bug fixes so it's recommended to install this OS X. Sometimes the Mac App Store version gives problems, so install 10.8.4 with the Combo edition > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1659 Make a backup before updating

You are not compelled to update. Apparently, how many glitches does it have? Is that more than the glitches in 10.8.3?

    I recommend:

    Give this a try:

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion

    Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

    Repair

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

After this is completed download and install 10.8.4 Mountain Lion Update v10.8.4 (Combo).

Thanks, will try. What about if the hard deive is failing or failed?

    Anything to do?

Stupid question. How do you make a backup of the system?

    Many thanks to all.

Simple bootable backup. You will need an external drive of sufficient capacity.

Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility

    Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue

             button.

         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.

         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.

         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it

             to the Destination entry field.

         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to

             the Source entry field.

         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

Thanks. Does the external drive needs to be totally empty?

I have a portable drive of 1terabite but some small amount of Gb are occupied.

    Would that be a problem?

    Tks!

It will be erased automatically, so yes, it should be totally empty. You could partition your 1 TB drive first, then clone to that partition, thus, protecting the files already on the drive.

To resize the drive do the following:

    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.

    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.

    PartitionTableinDU.png

    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)

    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.

You should now have a new volume on the drive.

It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

Hi, thanks for all the answers.

One more silly question. As the Mac is new3 or 4 days.

And I only installed Steam on it.

Is it necesary to do the back up or just the reinstall of operating system will do?

    Many thanks!

That is up to you. If you don't feel you need to back up anything then  you can skip it. But it's always wise to have a bootable backup just in case.

You may already have Contacts, Calendars and Bookmarks on your system, which are worth preserving. As Kappy says, make a bootable clone.  Though I use Carbon Copy Cloner.

Sorry, I have to ask... When you are in Software Update, do you click on the button that says "Update" rather than just doing a restart.  Did you see the progress bar while the update downloaded?

Yes I click update. But it jusy says that is already installed and that I need to restar.

The hard drive is verified at least.

Can you give us a screen shot of this situation?  (Shift+Cmd+3 for the full screen or Shift+Cmd+4 and select an area  then use the little camera icon to upload it)

Hope nothing new shows up :)

    Many thanks to all!!
