Tested testmy.net. Make no different in speed on my iP5. The web said it will get smarter and hence faster. So naturally after some tests, it will get faster.

    ozsmacd,

I can also demonstrate on my home wireless network via Wireshark the numerous TCP retransmissions, TCP duplicate acknowledgements and TCP out of order segments captured from my iPhone 5. I also believe something is broken in the iPhone 5 network stack, especially given the decreasing TCP window size issue we have seen that is resulting in slow throughput. I've been tracking this slow Wi-Fi issue since October 1, 2012 when I received my iPhone 5 and finally someone (you) have discovered a reliable workaround that restored my download speeds to normal: simply point the HTTP Proxy setting on the iPhone 5 to a local Web Proxy server!

Instead of using WinGate, I ended up using Privoxy (http://www.privoxy.org/, FREE) since it's a non-caching web proxy and an easy install.

    Thank You!

Another day, another iPhone.  On my 5th phone, I have only had the problem happen once on this iPhone, although I haven't really tested it yet (I've mainly been using my iPad).  Another Apple chip. :/  Funny though, this is the first replacement iPhone I have had that was manufactured at the very beginning of the month, all the other replacements were made near the end of the month:

Also, ALL of my iPhone's serial numbers (except replacement #2) started with F17!  Even my original iPhone 5 I bought off the shelf new!  I have the 32 GB iPhone 5 for Verizon.

The  proxy server on my network really solves this wifi issue, but what a weirdness.  I am using Squidman on a mac I have.

Here's another place where the wifi really falls short - use on a VPN.  I use Overplay VPN for streaming media.  On my iPod touch 5G, a direct VPN connection is abysmally slow.  I can set up the same conneciton on an older iPod 4G model running IOS 5.3.3 and the transfer speeds are 5 MB/sec.  The only fix for this 5G issue is to have a mac running VPN and a proxy server.  Again that solves it.  Hardly useful when I am away from home, though.

It is disheartening to read of so many in this thread who have exchanged iPhones or iPods to only have the same issue in the new unit.

Some of us are pretty convinced there are (at least) 2 different issues going on here. The majority pf people on this thread have connectivity issues - they can't get their device to connect to an access point reliably. Personally, I've never seen this issue on the 6 or 7 iPhone 5s I've had access to (thank goodness). The other issue is the one of wifi performance. I personally believe that ALL newer iDevices, like the iPhone 5, iPad Mini, iPad 4 and probably the iPod Touch 5G have this particular issue. All these devices have a newer radio chip in them. I think most people don't see the problem because they don't download large files, or because they are geographically located where the issue isn't too noticeable.

The thread at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4820670?start=0&tstart=0 discusses the performance problem in particular.

I'm also having the slow downloads of podcasts, and apps from the appstore.  Here is an screenshot I took while trying to figure out what exactly the problem is:

    image notated.png

In case the resolution isn't great enough to read the data, you can also view the full resolution image here:  https://www.dropbox.com/s/s1oaowc5m6ae61e/image%20notated.png

ALL devices were sitting on the same table when these measurements were taken.  One thing I found peculiar is that when the problem occured, the RS rate of the iPhone5 would plummet while the TX rate would stay quite a bit higher.  As you can see in this image, it's all the way down to 1M!  Using the phone on LTE is blazing fast and has NONE of the same problems as when using WIFI.

Another thing to note is that the wifi reception on ALL iPhone 5's seems to be FAR WEAKER than previous generation iOS devices!  Even my brother in law, who is NOT a techie, upgraded to an iPhone5 and is VERY unhappy that he cannot watch netflix in his gym at work because wifi reception is too weak.  His previous iPhone 4 worked just fine in the same exact location.

The REALLY BAD news is that Apple is either incompetent or doesn't seem to be taking this problem seriously.  I have had a trouble ticket open with them for this issue since OCTOBER 2012!!!

Even after replacing your 1st iphone5 u face the same wifi problem whereas you are comfortable with the wifi connectivity with the same router from your other phones like iphone4 and samsung galaxy S3 because this wifi problem exists in many iphone5s as its the weak area in iphone5s which Apple company also knows. One of my friend relieved and got rid of this problem after replacing the 3rd iphone5. So keep on replacing iphone5 till the time u get the one iphone5 free of this problem or 2nd option is to take iphone4S for the time being and wait for iphone5S , which will be released by end of this . I am sure Apple must have addressed this issue and iphone5s will be free of this wifi issue.

So let me get this straight; you said to keep getting the iPhone replaced until we get one with no problem.

The Apple Store isn't even willing to replace it anymore!  And with AppleCare over the phone, I have 2 options, I send the phone in, wait a week, then get it back (I would not have a phone for a week) or have them put a $750 hold on a credit card for an Express Replacement, neither of which could be done for me!!

You said: "2nd option is to take iphone4S for the time being and wait for iphone5S , which will be released by end of this ."

What is this?  At least here in the US, we are locked into 2 year contracts, meaning if we want to upgrade we have to pay full price for an iPhone unless we are out of our 2 year contract!  Plus, going to the 4S isn't even an 'Upgrade' considering it is a year older, slower, has a smaller screen, no 3rd mic and no LTE.  And Apple isn't going to replace an iPhone 5 with an iPhone 4S because by the terms of the warranty they CAN'T.  And even if I sell my iPhone 5 and get a 4S used, I won't even be able to get the 5S by the time my contract is finally over because the iPhone 6 will be out!!!

"I am sure Apple must have addressed this issue and iphone5s will be free of this wifi issue."

Why should I have to buy another iPhone to fix this problem when this phone shouldn't even be having this issue in the first place!  I bet the iPhone 5 is going to be Apple's Windows Vista, buy this very buggy product now, and pay for a fix later!

    My Dear Friend,

I know all ur reservations. In short I wanted to say that u will have to suffer and pay more so u do cancel ur contarct or make a new contarct once iphone5S comes after losing money. Actually some of my friends returned the iphone5 and got the replacement from Apple store. So u can also try to do that. Apple is not announcing the problem because then everyone will start replacing his iph5. So thats why they r quiet and replacing phones if someone approaches them. his problem of wifi in new models which were produced in the beginning of this year from jan to march13. Some shops are saying that Apple has rectified tOne of my friend in repair shop asked me to bring new wifi chip from somewhere then he can replace it and my phone will be ok. Anyways its so hard to see problems in our new iphone5 but what can we do...we r helpless???. Lets see

I was using a 2 years old TP-Link model TL-WR941ND (v2/v3), and was getting these really slow speeds (Download 0.5MBps), while all the other wifi devices ran fast. So I switched my iphone5 with apple, and the new one also has the same slow connection speed. The same happens with my father's and gf 's iPhone5.

Well, I decided to give it a shot and try my 5 years old wifi router, a LynkSys WRT-54G (using DD-WRT firmware), and guess what, the speeds are now blazing fast!!!

So this is definitelly a combination of HW and SW issue, that makes some routers work **** with iOS6, while others just work fine..

maybe we could try to create a list of Compatible and Incompatible routers, what do you think?

    Routers with Compatibility Issues

    TP-Link TL-WR941ND v2/v3

    Routers that work fine

    Linksys WRT54G

Why should I have to cancel my contract?  This is APPLE's fault.  They made the phone, they sold me the phone, it is THEIR problem.  If I want to cancel my contract, I'm going to have to pay $290 to Verizon!  I REFUSE to pay ANYMORE to fix APPLE'S STUPID MISTAKE.  I don't want the iPhone 5S, I want to keep my iPhone 5 and wait for my contract to end so I can get an iPhone 6.  If I do just go get the iPhone 5S, I not only paid Apple $850 (with AppleCare, no tax) for my half-broken iPhone 5, BUT I paid $290 to Verizon and then another $750 to Apple for an iPhone 5S, bring my total money wasted to $1890 PRE TAX.  So no, I will not get the iPhone 5S just to fix an issue that is Apple's fault.
