The Purchases Page is a tab in the Appp Store:

How are you updating - from the -menu "Software update" entry, or from the "updates" tab in the App Store? What is your curent Aperture version, your MacOS X version, and how did you buy Aperture? From the App Store or a boxed version?

A common problem when updating is, that Aperture has been moved or renamed. For the update to work, Aperture needs to be located in the "Applications" folder and simply named "Aperture", not  "Aperture 3" or something. If you have moved Aperture or renamed it, put it back.

    Hi LeonieDF

I am updating from the app store purchase page.  The version of Aperture I have is 3.4.4.  It is in the application directory; I purchased the program directly from the App Store.  It is named only Aperture nothing else.

Keeps giving me an error when updating.  When updating from the purchase page, it starts to update then all of a sudden in red letters it says: an error has occurred.

    Mildred,

do you have a reliable network connection?

When downloading from  the appStore, a firewall may be interfering (for example helpers like "Little snitch") or antivirus software.

You may want to disable them temporarily.

    Hi Leonie

I disabled the firewall and still cannot update.  I believe I do have a reliable connection.  Its almost finished installing when all of a sudden it just stops and tells me there is an error.

I have done it through the purchase page the update page to no avail.

I have no idea what to do.

    I suggest contacting AppleCare.
