Background (Steps Tried):

  • Full Reformat from Recovery System
  • Reset SMC
  • Reset PRAM

I have a latest generation 15" Retina macbook pro that I purchased in February of 2013.

10.8.3 was the most stable operating system I have ever used. I updated to 10.8.4 and the computer began freezing at random intervals throughout the day several times a day. It would happen when I plugged/unplugged HDMI, Thunderbolt, and usb. Even when all 3 were unplugged and I was only using safari, it just would randomly happen.

I thought perhaps I needed to reformat. so I backed everything up, booted to the recovery center, and completely reformatted the computer. It downloaded 10.8.3 from Apple to do the reinstall, and I set it up as a new computer to test. I updated to 10.8.4, and that same day, even with a new OS, it started the freezing again for no apparent reason. I am unable to find any logs about crashes from these random freezings.

I have since restored a time machine backup of my 10.8.3 from earlier last week and it is working FLAWLESSLY with all peripherals and has yet to freeze once. I'm not sure why, but 10.8.4 is a MAJOR downgrade for certain Retina Macbook pros as it appears to take them from full stability to barely even usable.

Just curious if anyone has experienced similar issues with their Retinas or otherwise.

Nope.  My mid-2012 rMBP has been running smooth on 10.8.4 I have plugged in a USB 3.0 WD external drive and used it. I've plugged in a HDMI->DVI adapter to use with an external monitor. I'm using my Thunderbolt ethernet adapter. So, no issues whatsoever with 10.8.4.

Mine freezes up on restart. The mouse cursor stays frozen in the top left corner for a few minutes before it let’s me through.

i have updated 4 macs and not one of them went flawlessy. the most important (mail server) was rebuilt less than 3 months ago because of a server app update codge. now it's looks like i'll have lost my mail (again) and am facing yet another rebuild. it seems (i've heard) they are blaming 'dysfunctional' macs for this one. and it also seems i have 4 of the buggers.

the spread is mac pros (retina), mac airs and mac minis (servers) of varying ages up to three years. so i'm not inclined to blame the hardware, evidence would suggest it's the update.

don't think i'll be considering IOS7 for a while if this is anything to go by.

this is starting to get sad, we need somebody to pull this rabble back together.

Since 10.8.4, the mouse on my early 2013 15" Retina model will occasionally freeze.  It usually happens when i'm casually browsing with Safari and pull up either mission control, or Launchpad.

I have a Macbook Pro 13" Retina not allowing me to login with any accounts. This includes local accounts and also mobile AD accounts. I also have a Mac Pro that is suddenly having mailbox index (MS Exchange mailbox) issues as well as throwing the occasional NetAuthSysAgent login issue. These were trucking along very happily before 10.8.4. Teach me for not testing longer and getting excited about the updates "Fixes"

mine also, immediately after upgrade and using SD card slot. So, if don't like to see grey screen with Apple logo and cursor for at least 10 minutes I should insert SD card into my macbook pro which I've bought at May 2013 for $2400 in San Francisco Apple Store and enjoy "more fast" booting. Extremely raw release...

Thank you for posting so that I know I'm not alone.  My non-Retina 2012 MBP also began freezing immediately after updating to 10.8.4.  I had updated through the App Store Software Updater, and then the freezing began.  I haven't had a hard freeze on a MBP in years.  Very frustrating.

I've had 3 hard freezes in the past several days.  Only solution each time has been a hard restart.  Seems to happen in conjuction with Mail.  Although, I haven't yet run applications one at a time to see if it is indeed only attributable to Mail.  But at this early stage, I can say that each freeze has occurred with Mail running.

I am currently downloading the manual combo updater in order to see if I can run that...in case it was just a bad update.

My issue was due to an SD card. I removed it and it restarts normally now.

My problem is totally different...I can boot my MBP normally ONLY when my SD card is inside it:))) In case if I remove it, it boots 10 minutes....

And what is combo updater? I am also looking for some new updates even ready to install beta staff in order to fix the issue with freezing on start...

It's a manual update of version 10.8.4. As I understand it, it is a full update, not an incremental update.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1659

I did install it over my already installed 10.8.4 (from Software Update as explained above). Haven't had it installed long enough to determine if the freezing is resolved. But I'm hopeful.

Thanks so much - I was having exactly the same problem. I had a Nifty Mini-drive inserted (without an SD card in it). As soon as I removed it my Mac started-up normally again.

    Thanks again!

Just a follow-up on my problem above:  I have had NO further incidents of freezing since I reinstalled the 10.8.4 Combo updater over the original buggy 10.8.4 install that had resulted from updating through Software Update. YMMV
