UPDATE: from the localisation of the noise on the back side, I believe it to be in the area of:

    • Skyworks 77464-20 Load-Insensitive Power Amplifier (LIPA®) module developed for WCDMA applications
    •   Avago ACPM-7181 Power Amplifier
    •   TriQuint TQM9M9030 surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter
    •   TriQuint TQM666052 PA-Duplexer Module

"At high transmit. powers it may suffer electromagnetic induction by cell transmition, generating the "bee like" interference." -> it has nothing to do with shielding and interference if you test the way I wrote (and listen to the bottom back side). The human ear goes from 20Hz-20MHz and the GSM bands have at least 800MHz. What you hear is one of the Power Amplifiers.

After three iPhones 4S returned to Apple for this same issue, I decided to wait for a long (a few months), hoping that Apple could fixed it. All previous iPhones I had were 32 Gb, and now I just bought another one, the fourth, with 16 Gb, longing for a smartphone with no static noise during calls. I'm giving the last chance to Apple, but if the fourth iPhone came with this same freaking noise, I'm definitively leaving Apple. Samsung's Galaxy Note II will be my choice, a great Smartphone who really catches me and at least have no noises during calls.

I'm gonna add some general interest links for using with serial no, like:

    1. apple warranty expiry date check https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

    2. apple hw serial number manufacuring date http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

Now you can check if your replacement device is refurbished or not (explicitly stated in factory field when using second link) and where and when does it come from.

For example my buzzing iPhone 4S comes from China - Foxconn (DQ) with production week 49 / 2012. So the problem is stil fresh.

So I just encountered this problem today while I was snowboarding... I shut my phone off because I thought  there was a corrosive external battery melting the insides causing it to hiss... That wasnt it however since my phone hasnt blown up... when I got home a few hours later I shut my phone off. Turned it back on & reset all setings (not data & media) and turned it back off. I turned it back on and it started to hiss again... I shut it off again removed the sime card and blew as hard as i could into the port, Turned it back off and on and voila no hissing.... Now I know thats pretty ghetto but try it out... Ha

I experienced crackling and static while listening to music through the speaker on my Sprint iPhone 4S in Spotify.  The same issue was met in Pandora.  I did not test on a call or through  ear buds.

It sounded like R2D2 was drunk and making sounds over my music.

After searching through several Apple support threads and various online forums I tried some of the advice listed above.

    I did the following:

    • Turned off device
    • Removed case
    • Blew out speakers
    • Removed SIM card
    • Blew out SIM card slot
    • Wiped SIM card and tray off with a dry paper towel.
    • Replaced SIM
    • Rebooted device
    • Tested

This fixed my issue.  I guess there was just some dust somewhere causing the crackling and static.  Good luck to the rest of you.

Because I thought it was a memory issue, I did the following:

    - close all open applications.

    - delete browsing history + cookies ( you can do this in the safari settings ).

    - finally I also did the soft reset (push power + home button together) of the Iphone.

Especially the last step solved my problem.

    Hi,

maybe this would help. When I searched in the internet about disturbing low noises while making calls on the Iphone 4s (I had such things the last few days), I found the following hint:

Enabling "Sound check" in the "Musci settings" of the IOS 6.1. should fix the issue!

I have done this yesterday and now my calls are crystal clear. The calls I have made at home at the very same position in the room, so the strenght of the GSM signal should be the same.

Maybe it is simple conincidence, maybe not - we will see. I personally don't see the connection between the two elements, but anyway. During the calls my WiFi is turned off, and 3g data as well.

Give it a try - maybe it could help you!

Everything anyone's posted as a "fix" is just coincidence. It's still there, sometimes you hear it sometimes you don't. It's interference with the cellular antenna, they all have it and Apple will never acknowledge the problem.

This seems to have worked for me, still isn't as clear as I would like, but it's a huge improvement!

I bought my phone a little less than two years ago. Today i tried to make a call and hear nothing but static. I only hear it when making phone calls... Music and everything else is fine. Has aybody had any luck with getting this issue fix after warranty is up? or am i up a creek without a paddle and have to get a new phone?

I had this problem, but only calling my boyfriend (who has an iPhone 5). I found a way around it! It's not a fix, but I can call him without static.

I use the Couple app to text him. In the app, there is a call button. When I use that to call him, instead of calling from the phone app, there isn't static.

This problem is SO frustrating, hopefully my input can help a little!

Yep, I am now on my second 4s (returned the first one immediately after noticing the buzzing, which had never happened with my 4) and the second one did it right away as well.  I thought maybe I was hallucinating or something, so I just kept it (still in warranty though so I'm going to try for a 3rd replacement) but now my ear is hurting as well.  My left ear, which is the one I hold the phone to, now has an ongoing vibration even when not using the phone.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I don't know what else it could be from and it started right after a phone conversation about a week ago.  It's actually kind of painful and pretty distracting... Really hoping I haven't sustained some kind of permanent damage.
