2 continuous days of iTunes "importing iTunes Library.xml" after failed startup

One day after returning to my latest generation Mac Mini with 10.8 (all updates applied) and Thunderbolt Display, I had a black screen and no mouse movement or keyboard press would turn the screen on. I do not use Standby mode. The Mac Mini felt like it was running hot. I forced a power off and restarted but the Bluetooth wouldn't connect to my keyboard and mouse. Waited a half hour. Could then get Bluetooth working but iTunes wouldn't load from my external drive, the icon just kept bouncing and eventually quit. Eventually I got a warning that the external drive was in read-only mode and that OSX couldn't repair it. Seemed like the Mac Mini was having issues so I connected my 2012 MacBook Pro to the same external drive and check the drive with Disk Warrior which found no errors. Tried to run iTunes again, pointing to the same location on the external drive but iTunes again wouldn't load. Rebooted into Safe Mode and ran iTunes again. This time I get a dialog box saying "Importing iTunes Library.xml..." That was 2 days ago and it's still runing. My library has over 100,000 tracks. At some point yesterday I got dialogue boxes asking me if I wanted to replace each individual older iOS app with the newer versions I was moving. I had to click yes for all my apps individually, one at a time. Except I never asked iTunes to "move" or copy anything. This is something it appears to be doing on its own, I'm guessing as a way to recreate a corrupted iTunes Library file.

 

How much longer can I expect this process to take and what exactly is it doing? Any help would be appreciated.
