Whenever I set a status message for Messages, it keeps resetting it after I wake my computer from sleep or unlock it from the screen saver. Is there any way to make it so it stays there? It was like that in the original iChat and ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, I've noticed this issue.

    Hi,

In Messages Menu > Preferences > General Section and the option about "When I return to the Computer, if my Status is Away: "  what have you got set ?

This is the bit that controls what happens when you come back from being Idle.

This is when there have been no keyboard or mouse input for 10 minutes.

Technically you can be Available and Idle (Amber setting for Buddies and yourself) or you can be Away and Idle.

You can't see the second as in iChat/Messages Away outranks Idle  (You can tell with Buddies if you mouse over them in the Buddy List)

(Some Apps do display the difference between Away and Away and Idle.)

    So...

In the top section in the General pane you can set to put up an Away Messages when you are Idle (Inactive)

The bit after Fast User Switching deals with your returning to the computer and being active on it.

You can set it to keep the Status as the Away Message.

    HI,

I just completed a test on my iMac and Messages 7.0.1

I set the Preferences in the General Section to Set Staus to Available on return for being Idle.

I also Unticked the item about setting the Away Messages if I went Idle.

I then set a Custom Saved Available Message on all my AIM accounts and my Google Account

I then Launched iChat 5 in Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro.

After 11 mins the Accounts on the iMac went Idle.

Tapping the mouse to light the screen back up changed the Status to Available but kept the chosen Custom Message.

I can't replicate what you are seeing happen on your Computer.
