I use iWeb ’09 for editing my website. For the last year, I’ve been using GoDaddy as the site host. All has been well…until today.   I made some changes to a couple of pages, but when I tried to publish these changes, I received the pop up message: Publish Error – An unknown error occurred.

I have exited and re-entered iWeb.  I have rebooted my computer.  I tried to delete the changes and publish without the changes.  None of these attempted fixes have allowed me to upload the edited text.

Any ideas what to do next?

If you are using the iWeb FTP, check your file names - especially image files - for spaces and/or special characters.

Sorry...but I'll need a little help here.  How do I establish if I am using iWeb FTP?   If I am, how do I check file names for spaces or "special characters"?  What constitutes a special character?

If you have the latest version of iWeb, which is iWeb 09 and you have not published your site to a local folder and you are not using another ftp client such as Cyberduck to upload your site to GoDaddy, then you are using the iWeb built in ftp.

Come on, it really is not that had to figure that out!

"Come on, it really is not that hard to figure that out"

Oh I see...being a level six must signify that you have no interest in assisting those you consider beneath your exaulted status.  Let me ask you this...why are you even on the Community Board?  You seem to have completely missed the reason for having such an exchange vehicle.

If you choose to resond to me or others...enough with the snarky remarks!

If you are using iWeb V 3.0.4 you can go to the publishing settings page for info...

    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Publish-Website.html

If you are using an older version you will be publishing to a local folder and uploading via an FTP app.

    Special characters include - . @ # % * ! etc

You are most likely to find them - or spaces - in recently added image file names. Check them first.

Arrogance is the worst form of ignorance and we have two regular contributors to this form who have an over abundance of this undesirable trait! They obviously feel inferior in real life so they try to boost their pathetic egos by pouring scorn on those who have a life outside of iWeb.

Hadrian should have built a bigger wall.

First...thank you for providing me with additional information regarding iWeb,  I'll check things out to see if I can unravel that publication problem.

Second...and just as important to me.. was.the discovery that I was not alone at being put off by the disrespectful response from Ethmoid.  I have to admit to being out of sorts ever since I picked up his reply this morning.  Your well crafted words were the perfect elixir.  Good to know there are folks like you out there.

Both he, and the one hiding behind Hadrian's wall, are more to be pitied than scolded. The other kids won't play with them anymore so let them have their fun.

If you click on your site name this is where the publishing options are:

The publishing error seems only to be occurring when I attempt to upload changes to one particular page.   While I added some text to that page, I did not add new photos.  But just to be safe, I went back and checked the image titles, but found no spaces or special characters.

But here’s the really baffling part.  Initial attempts to publish changes to that page are met with that Publish Error message. However when I let a couple of hours pass, the amendments do get published.  That is so even when that particular page continues to be displayed in red in iWeb…which normally signals that alterations have NOT been published.

You might say…well OK, so there’s a lag before changes are made…but they are made.  Well…while the changes are ultimately in place when I call up the website on my desktop and my iBook…that particular page on my iPad and my iPhone is blank!

My annual subscription to the website host is due in a couple of weeks.  If I’m unable to edit the site, I’m giving serious thought to just letting in die.  Kind of a sad thing to do after over ten years.

Any ideas, thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would try publishing your website to a local folder to see if you get the same error message

One last cry for help before I pull the plug on the website.  At the top of the page is the message I receive when I try to publish changes to thiis one page.  The note at the top reads Publish Error - An Unknown Eror Occurred. Note that the folder for that page remains red.  Changes to other pages go through fine.

Have you tried recreating the page anew and see if you can get it to publish?  Create a new site and drag the problem page down to it to store.  Then recreate the page.  Make sure that any files, graphics, photos, used in the page have no spaces or non conventional characters in the file name.

Also publish the site to a folder on your hard drive to test any changes before publishing up to the server.

In the process of recreating the problem page, I think I stumbled on why I was receiving the Publish Error notification when I tried to add new content.   It seems that a single page in the iWeb editing application, does have a maximum capacity insofar as content is concerned.  When I split the content of that particular page into three separate pages, I was able to make changes with no problems.

This solution is not backed by any technical explanation...but at least I'm now able to move forward with augmenting and editing that page.
