Q: Blue screen from nowhere....

I am running 10.6.8 and suddenly I get a blue screen for no apparent reason.  Have to restart.  Any ideas about why? Not sure where to start, except to run virus software...

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You may have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.

You need to first backup your Users files to a external storage drive (not/just only TimeMachine as it may fail to restore)

    Most commonly used backup methods

and then run through these  user tips to look for a possible cause/solutions.

Blue Screen while your using it is basically a kernel panic that didn't get out of hand to force a "you need to restart"

Gray, Blue or White screen at boot, w/spinner/progress bar

You need to restart, panic report assistance

It's usually caused by outdated third party software, but can be caused by OS X or hardware issues.

.Step by Step to fix your Mac

    Why is my computer slow?

Definitely don't install any anti-virus software at this point. This problem isn't due to any kind of malware, and anti-virus software could worsen or obscure the cause of the problem.

This may be a kernel panic. Check for a kernel panic log by opening the Console app and looking in the System Diagnostic Reports section, under Diagnostic and Usage Information. If you see any kernel panic logs, post the contents of the most recent one here.

Copy your users files folders (music, pictures, movies, documents etc) to a external drive.

Stick your 10.6 disk into the machine and reboot holding the c key down.

Second screen in is a option under the Utilities menu to Disk Utility

Select your boot drive on the left and First Aid > Repair Disk and Permissions.

    Quit.

Where you see the OS X installer, install OS X. This will replace just OS X with a clean copy and most programs of Apple are replaced, most third party programs will not be affected and your files are safe.

Once that is done select Quit or restart at the top menu.

Once you log into OS X, do Apple Menu > Software update until clear. This will bring all your Apple software up to date.

Next you have to go around and check for updates for all your third party software and if you can't, then uninstall those ones using the developers uninstall method.

If it's a program your using and then it causes Blue screen, it's likely that one.

If you run though the Steps here, you also can find out if it's a Hardware Issue causing your problems.

No, that's not a kernel panic log. If that's the only thing there, these must not be kernel panics, or are crashing in such a way that no log is saved. (I have seen that happen before.)

Is there anything reproducible about these crashes, or do they happen completely randomly? How frequently do you see it happen?

Really, they happen randomly-just while on Safari cruising around the internet.  Have had 3 or 4 instances.

The whole desktop just turns to a blue screen and won't do anything.  Then the only option I have is to restart...
