Q: How can I get rid of Yahoo search on Mountain Lion  safari .

I have tried everything to get rid of Yahoo from my newly installed Mountain lion upgrade. I have a MBP mid 2011 17".  . I'm used to using Safari so I would ltke to keep using it. BUT, even though I have Google as my default or perferred search engine, Yahoo keeps coming up. I have already tried hiding tool bar & then individually putting up the print , home.etc. icons. But that doesn't work either. I have searched for an answer to no avail thus far. It's beginning to look like I either use Yahoo w/Safari or switch to FF or Chrome. Any answers I will be grateful for. Thanking you in advance. I could just scream at this point. LOL

And one other thing is bugging me to death. Is there any way to enlarge the toolbar & icons on Mountain Lion. They are very tiny...too tiny. I've tried everything I could think of.

Happen to have a third-party extension or add-on for Safari (like GLIMS) that has changed the default?

Try deleting the Safari .plist file. Preferences can become corrupted.

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the following:

    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist

Click Go the move the com.apple.Safari.pist file to the Trash.

Quit and relaunch Safari and check Safari > Preferences  > General. Make sure Google is selected.

Hi, First, now I have NO address bar. Google is set as my default search engine. I still get Yahoo when searching. I clicked 'show tool bar & nothing happened. (no addreaa bar but I do have all the icons that are supposed to be there, print, home, & extentions. These are the extentions I just installed yesterday; WOT--Reload button---Zoomintosafari---Facebookzoom---adblock. Where in the worl did the address bar go?lol...And thank you for your quick response.I recieved another reponse to delete the Safari.plist file, but I've never done that before. I will do it though if that might  solve this problem. Thanks again

Thank you , Carolyn. I'm going to try what you suggested , I thought you should know I just installed Mountain Lion Friday. It was a very smooth install with no problems at all. I had taken all advice to prepare this MBP before the install & I think that paid off in light of all the problems I read that others were having. So, even though ML has just been installed so recently, you think you're suggeston might do the trick? Ty , Dear.

Now that you brought up  the extention thing, I wasn't having any headaches until I installed those that I told you about. I took them right from the Safari Extention site, thinking they would be safe. Also, I've had those same ones before without problems. Boy, do I have a lot to learn, I guess. Thanks.

Try deleting the Cache associated with Safari.

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the following:

    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.

Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

    Hey Carolyn,

I am having the same issue getting rid of the yahoo search. I tried deleting both things like you mentioned earlier for MUSICMISS, but the cache.db file keeps reappearing when I reopen safari. This problem originally occurred when I downloaded a new Adobe flash player update (I think it was a fake). I later deleted that as well as the MacKeeper that came with it. Any suggestions to getting my search bar back?

    Romans,

I did the exact same thing as you and was having the exact same problem and none of these solutions worked. This worked for me though.

Go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions. There should be one that says something weird about a new tab or a search bar with 1.0 at the end of it. Turn it off or delete it. It must have been installed with MacKeeper when you attempted to install Flash.

    Good luck!

This was the only answer that worked for me along the string. It may have been that my issue was just simple. I didn't have any .plist with safari or caches to delete. Thank you.
