Was it an Apple cord? or a 3rd party one?
I have never had a cord go bad in 6 years of iphone ownership.

It was a legit Apple cord. I've never had a problem with any of the old ones except they do not fit with my case. I took good care of it. I was thinking maybe because my room was a little hot today, but nothing like what should cause it to fall apart.

This is called "fraying" and unfortunately, it's normal. I'd agree with you somewhat in terms of cord quality going downhill; less plastic used = more cables that can be made for the same $. Get some electrical tape, and you will be fine. Unless, your cable is all exposed wire beyond the 30 pin connector joint.
