One iTunes account, several users and several devices. How can I make it work?

My husband bought an iPhone and set up an Apple ID. Since then I've bought an iPhone, we've both got an iPad each and we've just bought our son an iPod Touch. We'd like to use one Apple account as we share apps, etc. However, how do we separate the devices in terms of using FaceTime, iMessages, etc? Do we need to set up an Apple ID for each device? Because my husband's Apple ID is on my iPad, when someone calls him on FaceTime, it is also calling my iPad and my son's iTouch. I'd like to be able to iMessage my son, but I'm not sure if giving him a separate Apple ID is a good idea (he's seven). I hope this all makes sense. I'm totally hopeless when it come to this kind of thing!
