I cant seem to be able to drag it back between 2 keywords at a higher level.
You drag the keyword onto the name of the next level - Aperture will sort the keywords below. YOu do not arrange the order of the keywords.
For example - given the keywords
To sort vegetables under living things, drag it onto the keyword living_things.
that will create a new subcategory. You could not move it between two keywords directly.

Sorry, don't get it,
most of my keywords are not in a subcategory, they are loose in the keywords hud. in your example I'm just trying to take vegetables out of flowers all together and leave it unnested, in no subcategory.

Hopping in ... ... Drag "Vegetable" to a blank space in the Keyword HUD to move it to the top level. If there is no blank space, use Search to limit the display to, for example, "Vege" -- this should create some blank space into which you can drop the still-visible "Vegetables" keyword.
