Q: New Macbook Air - wifi connectivity problems

Hey guys,

Hope someone can help?

I have a brand new Macbook Air which is able to connect to the internet for just a minute or two before suddenly it drops out. This is even though the signal still shows at full strength and all my other devices are still able to surf the net as per normal.

This device is straight out of the box so no 3rd party applications have been installed. I heard that the wifi has been upgraded to 802.11n on this machine, could that be an issue?

Do i need to return the machine or is there is a software fix for this problem?

Thanks heaps!

Vicky

I'm having the same problem. Just got my new 2013 Haswell MacBook Air and it won't say connected to the wifi. It will connect at first but then the connection drops. The laptop will refuse to connect again until I reboot the machine. After the reboot, wifi will work again for a bit then drop again. The router is working fine as my other devices iPhone, couple desktops, have no problem staying connected. Router is a Netgear WNDR3700 running the latest firmware version.

What do you mean with "disable wi-fi." How do you did you do that?

I clicked the icon on the top bar and clicked 'Turn Wi-Fi Off'  then did it again to turn it back on.

The issue happened to me 5 or 6 times in the first handful of minutes I had it, but has not happened in over an hour.

After posting that it wasn't happening to me anymore, it has been happening almost constantly...  very frustrating

This is happening now at least every 15-30 minutes. Again, according to the network preferences I'm connected, but I can't resolve any address. I can disconnect the wireless and reconnect and then the internet works again, but only for a limited period of time. Again, EVERY other device on the network is working fine. Apple where are you?

Only used my new MBA 11 for short periods during the day. Just have a look mainly if it woke up with WiFi connection intact. Started surfing the Web toninght and after a short time the connection failed once more. Trouble is that there is no way to switch ON the Wi-Fi. Restarted and everything is right again. Thought that thisp problem was solvable but so far no one has come up with a solution and even the WIFU GURU is silent now.

Since my last post, almost 4 hours ago, I haven't lost my connection.

Here is what I have done -

renewed DHCP lease, Change MTU settings and then followed the instructions on this page.

You can kill your wifi here, then turn it on the same way.

Check my post from 5 minutes ago, see if that helps

    Fred,

Are you seeing Wi-Fi turn off or are the bars simply turning grey ? If you are seeing WiFi turn OFF and you have to click Turn WiFi On to get Wifi working, then it could be bad hardware. On the other hand if its just getting disconnected and you are seeing the WiFi icon with grey bars it could be a software or interop. issue.

All you folks runing dd-wrt, are you running your wireless in 11n only mode ? Try changing that to 11a+n mode if possible and check if you have any connectivity.

Are you guys having issues connecting in 5 Ghz or 2.4 Ghz ?

I have similar problem with my new Macbook Air and WiFi. The connection drops, when I try to download something bigger than ~10M(pinging every IP, even router, gives timeout). And my "wifi" icon is still not grey and this network manager says that I'm connected.

The only way to not get dropped from WiFi is to have WiFi Diagnostisc tool turned on in backgroud. Then WiFi connection will remain OK. But why?!

My router works OK(It's Cisco WAP4410N) with few other latops/mobiles, so it's probably something with Macbook?

Would you be willing to post their solution? I'm hoping it's not a hardware problem. I need this machine working for a trip early next week and there isn't an apple store close by but I'll make the trip up there if I have to.
