Q: What if it says volume check failed and invalid key length?

Type in sudo fsck_hfs -y /dev/disk0s3 and get to checking catalog file then next line is invalid key length (4, 998) next line volume check failed.

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

You could also try running fsck in Single User until it's repaired. Worth a shot before buying DW. Or if you have a bootable clone, reformat the drive and clone back.
