I got an apple wireless keyboard and a magic trackpad purchased last december and suddenly they have become battery hoggers too. interestingly they drained my battries when i had not used them for a whole month! also, they indicate wrong battery levels at times. sometimes, reinsterting old batteries that were drained starts working and they show a battery percentage of good 15 to 20%!!!

Plus one. Disconcerning to see such an old and frequented post still unresolved.
Note, I use an apple keyboard on my Win7 computer at work hard out all day and I think I swap the batteries once or twice a year. At home on iMac / OSX with the same keyboard and a trackpad - batteries last measured in days.

so its an issue with the bluetooth driver on the mac.
its bad to see that day by day, old things that worked in apple products without any problem just stop working without a reason. this reengineering the product from groud up seems to be apples obsessive compulsion to fiddle everything and just ruin it.
if it ain't broke dont fix it!

Same issue but far worse now on 10.9 switched to use USB KB as unable to use BT anymore with any degree of reliability .
Apples driver is bader was always bad , battery reports are incorrect .
take off bat lid , wait ten secs , replace lid , magically bats read 99% charged up from 19% new in last 12hrs..
same bats , connection reconnection every 5 mins . Battery monitor running down faster than actually is..
Where is apple support on this since release of OSX 10.1 ?? We are now on 10.9 and its worse than ever.

I have a 2009 Mini and the Apple small metal keyboard and Magic Mouse have excellent battery life. I noted no change after installing Mavericks.

I was advised to get NiMH rechargables for my Magic Mouse. I have an 8-pack with at least 4 at full charge at all times. Muche cheaper.
I almost got an Apple wireless keyboard, but chose the Logitech "Solar" instead. I can turn on a desk lamp and charge it while I use it, and it cost the same as the Apple Keyboard.
