Hello there darryll77,
Here is a great article for resolving software issues with the iPod classic named iPod classic Troubleshooting Assistant found here http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/.
Here is the first step to get you started.
To reset your iPod:
- 1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
- 2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
- If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
- If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

Thanks for all the info but don't seem to be getting anywhere.
When i toggle the hold switch, everything appears to be fine then the light disappears and you just get the menu screen with music photos video etc but you cant use the wheel to get off music or the select to get into music plus it doesn't seem to want to reset either, confused.com

That should not be a problem Darryll,
If the reset did not take, or it did not work, then click on the link I provided, http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/ and continue following the directions there.
It will resolve the issue if it is to do with softwre, or isolate it down to a hardware issue.
All the very best,

Thanks for all your help & info.
I reckon the wheel isnt working at all cos nothing happens at all when i try to reset or move the cursor up or down.
Is this fixable or is it time for a new bit of kit?
