My iphone is model number A1429 and according to this site my phone is GSM & CDMA.  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3939   However, some people say that it's only CDMA if on Verizon and Sprint. I bought my phone in the UK so is it GSM or GSM & CDMA? If CDMA is only verizon and Sprint why does it not say this on the Apple site, and why is there not a similar page on the UK site for UK users?  What would happen if I installed the wrong software/ipsw file?  TIA

If it has a SIM slot (right-hand side) then you can use the GSM network. Whether or not the phone is unlocked is an entirely different story. Ask the carrier/store you bought it from.

Also, are you wanting to visit America using your new iPhone? Is that your question?

If so, go with T-mobile, not Verizon/Sprint for a prepaid service.

Model 1429 is not sold by Apple outside the USA.

Thanks for the replies. I wanted to restore from an ipsw so wanted to know which version I needed. I found some info on the UK website under iPhone's tech specs and it says 1429 is both GSM and CDMA.

Modular747 you must be mis-informed as my phone is a UK phone bought from a main phone supplier and is A1429. And as above, both models are listed in the UK tech specs

Don't. Restore it by letting iTunes download the correct version. There is no legitimate reason to do it any other way.

Exactly what "main phone supplier" did you buy it from? The A1429 is NOT sold outside of the US and some very small markets in places like South Korea that use CDMA.

YOU did not read my post which says that APPLE does not sell the 1428 model outside the USA, as there are no CDMA carriers elsewhere.  All iPhone 5 models show in the tech specs including the USA-AT&T only 1428, which is not sold by Apple outside the USA

Note that the CDMA section of the phone is permanently locked to a specific CDMA carrier, and all CDMA models are sold by Apple as specific to that carrier.  The phone you bought has to be a re-sale of a USA phone, regardless of the claims of the "main phone supplier."  (If that supplier was Carephonewarehouse, it's typical of their dodgy sleaze tactics)

Was indeed carphone warehouse. Why is it dodgy? These phones are covered by apple's warranty, if they were dodgy I'd assume apple would not cover them?

The warranty will be valid only in the USA, if originated there.

    Did you verify that here?

BTW, if you hack the phone to downgrade, the warranty is voided

It does appear that the A1429 phone is supposed to be available outside the US according to this, http://www.iphonefaq.org/archives/972158

It appears that it's the 1428 that's US/Canada only, and only on AT&T.

This also states that UK models are 1429

As for the restore, I was led to believe that you couldn't restore to iOS 6 and had to do it via ipsw, but I have just performed a normal restore and it's gone back to iOS 6.

modular747 I verified that my phone is indeed covered by warranty using that link, but it does not specify are eg US or UK, is there any way to know?

Edit: From that page I just clicked to see how much it cost to upgrade my applecare and it took me to the UK site and showed me the prices in GBP, so I'm guessing my warranty is for UK too?

No, that only means that you were on the UK section of the Apple web site.

There are 2 versions of 1429 - GSM only and CDMA+GSM.  The CDMA version is sold  only in the USA

If it's a USA only model the warranty is USA only. Apple in the UK does not stock the CDMA version for warranty replacement.

I don't quite understand how or why you were sold a CDMA phone in the UK because there are no CDMA networks that exist in the UK.  All UK networks require that you insert a sim card into your phone to be able to use it.

Normally, if you purchase an iPhone in the UK, you should probably go direct to the Apple store or if you have a phone company in mind, then go to one of their shops and purchase from there, but not somewhere like CarephoneWarehouse.

Thanks for your help. That's what I was trying to show with those links. The 1429 IS available outside the US, just the US version of the 1429 and the UK version of teh 1429 are different. How you know if you have the UK version or the US version I don't know? But I have to assume that mine is a bonafied UK version otherwise I'm sure carphone warehouse would ahve got into all sorts of issues before now. If they were selling phones in the UK that didn't have a valid warranty they'd be a lot of bother for sure.

Just for further clarification I've just spoken to a friend who bought his iphone 5 from a UK apple store and his is also a 1429.

I never said I had a CDMA phone, just that I had an A1429

What's wrong with using carphone warehouse? I can't see how a firm as big as they are are dodgy Maybe I'm just being naive. But as I said, if phones from carphone warehouse were not legit they'd ahve ben found out by now as I'm sure there's been a number of people who have had to take their phone into apple for warranty. Also, surely I wouldn't be allowed to upgrade my warranty either if there was something wrong with mine?

Modular747, I forgot to mention that the link you posted was a US one, and as soon as I entered my serial number it took me to the UK site, if it was a US surely I would have stayed on the US site?
