Welcome to Apple Support Communities! First, your iPod may require a specific or later version of iPod software. Use iTunes 7 or later to determine if your iPod's software needs to be updated.
If that isn't the issue, then I'd give the iPod troubleshooting assistant a shot, and see if that helps resolve it:
