Q: Viewer in Final Cut Pro X is blank.

I have a Mac-Pro 2008 and been using Final Cut Pro X.0.8 on it

I have had issues with the Hard-drive in my Mac-Pro.

I took it to a Mac Service agent. They installed a second 1Tb hard-drive and installed Snow Leopard 10.6. and made it start-up drive

When I got it home, it started on new drive, so I set it up with country registration etc.

As well as setup copied all my setting from the old Hard-drive. (FCPX; iLife etc)

Final Cut would not work with this, so had to download updates for Snow Leopard, iPhoto etc.

Final cut now opens but

no longer shows any video for existing Event clips or time line clips. Skimming does result in audio, however

if I try to play a clip (with Space-bar), Final Cut stops responding.

Also stops responding when trying to load/view Event on external drive.

Video card not changed.

Tried pulling old Hard-drive out, no change.

Checked for FCPX updates, says its up to date.

Is there some settings I can change, or do I need to delete FCPX and re-install.

If I need to re-install, can I save some of the additional download' material so I do not need to re-download that after fresh install.

Also with this hard-drive issue, how many free down-loads am I allowed of FCPX

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Have you tried trashing the preferences?

Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.

    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/

Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-

    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.

    2. Click Trash

The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.

Regarding downloading FCP X, I believe you can do it an infinite number of times  ........  there is no limit.

I would start by deleting preferences, which is easy to do with Preference Manager (free from Digital Rebellion).

If that does not work, then I'd trash FCP X and redownload from the App Store. There is no limit on the number of times you can redownload.

Since it plays audio and not video, I would suspect you are missing codecs or that somehow FCP is not accessing them the way it should.

First thing I would try (after following the trash preferences advice you've received) is to open FCP in a new user account. If that doesn't work…

There is a utility app named FCS Remover which I recommend to trash FCPX and all related files. Not sure whether it removes supplemental content as well but I wouldn't make any attempt to retain it. Download FCP and then run Software Updates to make sure you have all the QT codecs you need.

    Good luck.

I downloaded Preferance Manager. I ticked only FCPX and deleted preferances. This did not work.

I changed user to Apple. This worked, mostly. What I mean is that it now displays video and audio for Events and Projects on an external drive. However the single Event and Project carried over on the on-board hard-drive can no longer be seen.

Now that it appears to be working on one User and not the Main User.

Is there a way of deleting it on the faulty User and re-installing on Main User.

Or Should I go back into the faulty user then delete FCPX using the FCS remover.

Do you have the URL to the FCS Remover.

NB: The old hard-drive was described as faulting when the tech loaded the New/now used hard-drive. Do you think it wise to delete user with faulty FCPX, as other software may have been corrupted during transfer set-up.

Then change Apple user back to my registration for downloads etc

Thanks for information. I have done this once (with your advice) but no luck. Another suggested changing Users. This resulted in working FCPX (Although not fully tested) but leaves me with problem of using a non-registered 'Apple User' and a faulty registered User from which I would be allowed further downloads.

    Thanks again.

Getting close to trashing FCPX as suggested. Although as mentioned in my other replies, I am wondering if by transfering from a dying hard-drive may have cause to believe other software may also turn out faulty. Would it be better to start again.

What do you mean by, "Start again"?

Erase hard drive and reinstall Operating System etc. or erase FCP X?

The latter only takes a second to erase and a few minutes to re-download.

FCS Remover is available (free) from the same place as Preference Manager

So open FCP from your normal user account and move the  projects and events to another drive at the root level.

Does 'Root Level' mean from Finder or from within Final Cut Pro.

Using Finder, I moved an Event from an external drive to the on-board FCPX Event folder.

No change from my User profile.

I then downloaded FCS Remover, and removed FCPX.

I then re-installed FCPX from Apple. (I cannot remember if I re-started computer between removing and re-installing FCP)

My User cannot use FCPX, but user called Apple can.

I think next step best to Format Hard-drive then have fresh install of Snow Leopard.

I have a Snow Leopard disc and am now researching best way to make fresh install.

    Thank you for your help.

THank you for all referance information. It helps in a number of areas.

Sorry for abreviated launguage "start again".

I have now tried re-installing FCPX with no change, so about to start formating the hard-drive and re-installing O/S.

It appears my User profile is not happy with FCPX.

Thank you again for your help.

I fail to see any reason to reinstall the whole OS.

It is quite clear that something in your user account is causing the problem.

Did you try:  in FCP X, do "Window->Revert to Original Layout"?

    or delete the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro/Layouts ?

One other thing I would try is to run OnyX and let it clear caches and do other maintenance things.

On your advice I did the following.

1/ From within FCPX, reverted to Original Layout, -

2/ From Finder I deleted layouts

    3/ I downloaded OnyX for my O/S

    No change.

I then deleted FCPX with FCS Remover, then emptied trash, then re-run OnyX. (on System, User, Preferances and any other I could find)

After new install of FCPX from Apple store, problem still apparent in my User account but FCPX works in Apple User account.

Extra information. Both Quicktime player and Motion work in my User profile to view video.

    Latest.

    I went into system preferances / Accounts;

I set up a new account, deleted faulty account, then made new account , the startup account.

FCPX appears to be working now. Thank you for all your help.

Glad to hear you're back in business.

Deleting the User Account was an obvious candidate but another possible cure has occurred to me  ..........  something I do regularly and which should be done after installing new software etc.

Repair Disk Permissions using Disk Utility.

I'm not entirely sure exactly what "Permissions" are, but I suspect this problem may have been connected with corrupt permissions.

It's great to be wise after the event.
