Maybe the iPad Cover Lock / Unlock option is off? Try switching it on.

Make sure the cover lock/unlock is on. Go to
Settings > General > iPad covers lock/unlock > On
If it is indeed on then you might have a problem with your Smartcover. The only way to find out what Apple will do is to talk to Apple. Visit an Apple store or call.

when did you buy the SmartCover? -older ones dont work with the new iPad because Apple changed the polarity of the magnets - Smart Covers made from late 2011 on do work - for awhile Apple was offering free exchanges for older Smart Covers if you had an new iPad - dont know if they are still doing this

Very interesting, needleman. Yet Apple.com indicates that the Smart Cover is compatible with both the 2nd and 3rd generation iPads. Where can I get the part number of the one best suited to the 3rd generation?
