I have an iMac (iMac 8,1) running OS X 10.5.8 and I want to know if I can upgrade my OS to Mountain Lion or whatever the appropriate OS would be?

    Hey!

    Mountain Lion Requirements:

    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)

    Your Mac needs:

    • OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
    • 2 GB or more of memory
    • 8 GB or more of available space

You need first to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 before you can upgrade to Mountain Lion 10.8.4

To purchase the Snow Leopard DVD contact AppleCare

Here are the specs for ML. I think you'd be best served by upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/

But what are your specs in Apple menu? Please go to  Menu > About this Mac > and tell us Version, Processor & Memory specs on your Mac.

You could take ML. You'd need to upgrade to 10.6.8 first, for the AppStore. But I'd suggest going up to 4GB of RAM. Even though the specs say 2 GB is minimum, it is RAM hungry. The more RAM the merrier.
