Try restarting the iPhone, router and AppleTV.

I've tried restarting all three multiple times. Still not working
The AppleTV is not showing up as a speaker option for my iPhone.
My iPhone is connected to my home network. Other speakers on my home network show up, not sure why my Apple TV speaker won't show up. Also the Apple TV speaker shows up in my iTunes on my MacBook, just not on my iPhone. Odd.
this has worked in the past, not sure why its not working now.
could it be a glitch in my iphone5 ios?

i have the hdmi cable plugged into the back of the apple tv, but no audio cables.
maybe the airplay will only work when the audio specific cables are plugged in?
no, that doesn't seem right b/c it already works from my macbook. hmmm...

ok, that didn't work. i plugged into the audio port in the back of the apple tv, but same result as just having the HDMI cable in. the apple tv speakers don't show up on my iphone, but do show up on my laptop. why? why!!

Ok, I've erased and redownloaded the app REMOTE, and it suggests to connect with the apple tv I need to turn on homesharing from the computers prompt. Only problem is there is no such prompt under computers on my apple tv. its a second generation apple tv. and i checked, it says the software on the apple tv is up to date.
also, on the apple tv under general settings there is a prompt for REMOTES, and the add remote option is greyed out. although when i am over the greyed out option it shows a picture of REMOTE app icon and suggests that all you need to do is download the app to control the apple tv.

i've controlled this apple tv in the past with my iphone.
why can't i get it to work now?

ok, i looked up the serial number of my apple tv and contrary to what i thought its a first generation machine. http://support.apple.com/specs/#ym905096yr4
i could have sworn I had my iphone controlling my apple tv, but maybe it was a false memory.

My iphone5 is also unable to find my wireless printer.
Whereas my MacBook can find my wireless printer three ways (1) via usb cable (2) via airport (3) via the printers own wireless number.
why can't my iphone interact with anything wireless in my house, but my laptop can?
