I agree with Linc about that your boot drive might be failing, I saw that a couple of time stared with extreme slowness. Backup your data immedietly
My advice to refresh your drive if its still functional is to do a full erase , fresh os installation then restore your date that you backed up from TimeMachine.
To gain a real enhancment for the performance consider an SSD HDD upgrade. alnog side with your recent memory upgrade you will feel a huge boost to your mac.

A temperature sensor could be bad. I've had this problem for a while now, did everything from an sic and pram reset to a fresh mavericks install. only got a solution today. Try this link http://www.rdoxenham.com/?p=259
You will have to keep an eye on your temperature, but that's it. Till you're ready to go get it fixed at an apple store.
