Hi, My question is whether it is possible to change the trackpad on a 2011 MBP without changing the top casing as well?

The reason I ask is that one of my machines was delivered with a fault and the re-seller claims have to have replaced the track pad three times.  I am beginning to doubt this as the exact same fault keeps recurring.

Get your money back and deal directly with Apple if possible. Too many stories here of people buying "new" from a third-pary reseller only to find the computer was a year old or previously registered.
