A button in the upper left corner will return you to the inbox, or out of the particular account if you have multiple accounts.

Just above the message on the left.

Isn't there a setting that changes the overall default of the mailbox so that when a message is read, you are *automatically* returned to the mailbox instead of being advanced to the next unread email? Could've sworn this was a feature that existe....or am I thinking of Android email?

How are you advancing to the next email. That requires you to either click on the arrow on the right side of the mail, or on the setting we have described on the left side of the mail. I don't know of anything that would set it to go to the next email automatically.

Trashing a message goes to the next message.

That's true. I wasn't thinking about that.

Am not interested in automatically advancing to the next message in my inbox when deleting the one I've just currently read. I'm interested in returning to my list of email messages in my inbox after having just deleted one that I've read. This *used* to be a setting in the mail configuration whereby this would be done automatically each time you read and delete an email message. I notice now, however, that the next email is automatically opened when the existing one you've just read has been deleted.

That's the way it works, and there is no setting to change that behavior.

Not to say you could be correct, but I do not remember that behavior. Actually, if I delete a message I am looking at in Outlook, it works in a similar fashion, but that may have to do with the fact we usually view messages in Outlook in a preview manner.

This really should be addressed. The only reason I love using the Gmail app is because it automatically brings me back to the inbox after I delete a message. Sometimes I don't want to open the next message as I want to keep it unread so as to remind me of it. I have to go and mark it as unread every time. Waste of time.
There should be a simple fix for this.
