Q: Password or name not recognised...

I have reinstalled 10.6 from the DVD on a hdd (without erasing) but find that after booting the system is locked against all changes.  When I type name and password at the prompt all I get is the message 'You must type an administrator's name and password to make changes to system preferences'

I have been back to the install DVD and reentered the password twice but it makes no difference. When I am prompted for the password on booting it is accepted though.

Whaat am I doing worng?

Many thanks

macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

So you performed a #8 Reinstall Just OS X over itself and now are locked out from logging in.

Ok, option/alt key boot off the 10.6 disk again.

Perform a #6 Reset User Password and also Disk Utility > Repair Permissions

..Step by Step to fix your Mac

In my Steps I have Repair  Permissions before #8 Reinstall Just OS X because this issue does popup from time to time.

Hope this works in resolving your issues.

Thanks for the reply, ds, but this hasn't helped. I have repaired disk permissions, repaired the disk (unnecessary), and changed the password - or at least reaffirmed the password - using the disk. Whenever i click the padlock sign and enter the name and password I just get 'Try entering your information again'.

When I boot-alt and choose the disk, it boots OK and last time did not ask for a password before the desktop appears...
