There could be other reasons for why the Mac is freezing ...
Have you verified the startup disk for errors?
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk
if repairs are necessary, insert the install disc that came with your Mac and follow the instructions here.

Sorry to say but you are between a rock and a hard place. Apple has the final word and if they say they will not replace the board as it is not affected by the intel recall then that is it, over, done, end of story. If you want your mac fixed you will have to pay for it.
