I am using Numbers and have created a Sopreadsheet.  I have set the Font, Size, Style and Alignment in the Lettered "menu" area at the top of the document. However, when I enter a new line, whether it be within the body of the spreadsheet or a new line at the bottom, it changes all of these settings - everytime.  How can I avoid this happening as everytime I have to reset the requirements.  Thank you.

When you make changes to the font, the changes apply to whatever is selected at the time. Nothing else. Select the entire table, or a group of tables, to make mass changes that will also apply to whatever is written in those tables later.

Thanks Jerrold - I DO select the entire table by clicking on the lettered column at the top and I also highlight the WHOLE spreadsheet and select the font, size, style and alighment for the whole spreadsheet - but it still changes.  It is driving me mad!

Select the table by clicking on its name in the Sheets Pane.

Jerry - thanks again - in the Sheets Panel it only shows two things. (1) Imported AppleWorks..... (which I can't now use in Mountain Lion anyway) and (2) Table 1.

Table1 will highlight the whole document but even then if I set the various elements that I want and Save it does not do so for if I then try to insert a row somewhere in the middle of the document it reverts to something I don't want.

I noticed yesterday that there have been other similar queries but it didn't seem there were answers unless I have missed something.  Seems maybe Numbers has a fault?

I expected a Numbers file, not an Excel file. In either case, your 500 entry includes a space character after the number. Removing that character results in a proper sort.

Jerry - I don't get your message.  I never mentioned Excel and I am asking for help on a Numbers forum!  And I haven't a clue what you mean about "your 500 entry includes a space character after the number. Removing that character results in a proper sort.".  Have you posted this reply to my query by mistake?

I still haven't been able to solve MY problem!

    Sorry Lecia,

I accidently clicked Reply on your message when intending to answer another question. Even I don't know how I could have done that! Please disregard.

l can't give you a better answer than that what I suggested should work. You know, when you do a normal Paste, the format is transferred from the source to the destination. That's one way a format can change in a table without your doing any explicit reformatting.

I think Jerry responded to the wrong message. There is another thread about sorting and typing the number 500.

    Hello

How do you "enter a new line"? Typing text from keyboard or pasting something from clipboard? If the latter, pasting will preserve the original text style in clipboard.

One way to strip the original style of text and let it honour the current stlye is to use "Paste and Match Style" instead of "Paste" in "Edit" menu. The keyboard shortcut for it is command + option + shift + v.

Thanks Jerry.  Re MY query - I am not doing a Paste.  It is a new direct entry that changes. Lecia

    Lecia,

Open a new blank template and make a test document. See if you have the same problem in a new document. Let us know.

Hi Jerry - thanks for yours.  I have already tried your suggestion :   I opened a new blank template and tested it and the same thing is happening.

I highlight the whole document and set my specifications to Helvetica, Size 12, Regular and set the alignment for each column A, B, C etc. I can then put in numerous rows of text and numbers set to my specifications with no problem.  But the minute I insert a blank row somewhere in the middle of all this and type (NOT paste) in new work - it changes to something I don't want!  It changes to Helvetica Neue, Size 10, Regular and the alignment is not what I want.

It ALWAYS does this!! I think there is definitely a problem with Numbers!

Furthermore, if I try setting my specifications column by column, for instance, Row A, Row B that's fine - UNTIL I then want to insert a row and then once again it changes to Helvetica Neue, Size 10, Regular and the alignment changes too.!

    I give up!

Unless NUMBERS can give me a solution to this very irritating problem!

    Hello

I cannot reproduce the said behaviour. Perhaps your Numbers plist file is corrupt.

    You may try as follows:

    1) Quit Numbers.

    2) Open ~/Library/Preferences folder in Finder. In OS 10.7 or later, this folder is hidden for some reason. In order to open it, use Finder's Go > Go to Folder… menu, and specfiy the path:

    ~/Library/Preferences

    3) Move (drag and drop) the following file to desktop:

    com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist

    4) Launch Numbers and test the behaviour. Numbers.app will create new com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist file with initial settings etc.

5a) If the said problematic behaviour is gone, the culprit was the corrupt plist file. You just need to redo some settings from Numbers > Preferences… menu and the problem will be solved.

5b) If the problematic behaivour persists, plist was not the cause and so you may restore it from desktop. To do it, first quit Numbers and then replace the newly created ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist with the one in desktop.

If this does not fix it, next I'd suspect font problem.

    Good luck,

    H
