This is the soultion. It' not a bug. If you throw stuff into "Up Next", you can't shuffle b/c it wouldn't be clear what you're shuffling. Shuffling what you're looking at now? Shuffling what's in Up Next? Who knows.

Just hit "Clear" in Up Next and you get your buttons back. Thanks Jared.

hi, i have the same problem with itunes 11 on my mac pro (2008), my OS is 10.7.5itunes11.png

only after i turn on "shuffle" via the menu and then turn it off again, i can suddenly see the icons.

any idea why this happens? it happens randomly, i couldn't find out why, restart doesn't help at all, it happens from time to time when im clicking around in itunes...

oh, and i add many songs at once to itunes, and i would like to just listen to my main library which i sort by date added. tehjeffers suggested to create playlists. but i dont want to create playlists every day (i already have like 500 of them - and without the former function of having multiple windows, it's impossible to manage the playlists in itunes 11.

As an added note, this issue seems to occur when you open a song from a file as well. (As opposed to within iTunes). I assume that doing this simply acts like the "up next" feature, but I still feel like I should then have been able to disable shuffling (and it would continue alphabetically) or enable shuffling (clears and resets up next queue). Logic tells me this would be a better way of handling it.

In my opinion is IS a bug. If I throw things in up next AND want it to shuffle, what then? I think your explaination isn't much of one. If a user puts things in the up next list, then it should be obvious that that's the list that should be shuffled.

To be doubly clear, these buttons disappear when you add anything to the "Up Next" list by dragging an item to the display at the top or by right-clicking. That's whythey disappear. They're assuming you want to play what you added to that list next (aka in that order). Hence, the "Up Next" name.

If you want to shuffle things in a list, that's what a playlist is for. For the average user however, it would not be clear what was being shuffled. You may have a preference as to what it should be for your situation, but when the most popular media player in the world is designed, it has to be made for the average user. Clarity is important, and you can still shuffle a list of songs. Instead of dragging it up to the display, drag it to the right into the open space in the list of playlists to create a new playlist. It's still just one step. Pretty well designed if you ask me.

I'm a little unsure what your goal is. Could you clarify?

No. I shouldn't have to create a playlist every time I have to play a certain selection of music, BUT also have it shuffled.

The way it is now if I select 3 albums from 3 different artists, either I have to listen to each album completely in order (up next) or create a new playlist each time (and remember to delete it when I'm done).

When in the past I could just add my selection to iTunes DJ and it would shuffle in that.

Since they removed iTunes DJ, which was a stupid decision, and added Up Next, they could easily add the shuffle feature to up next. It's obvious that if you add tracks to Up Next and then turn on shuffle that you want Up Next to be shuffled. **** they could even add the shuffle button to the up next menu it self. Then it would be beyond clear what you're shuffling.

Words can't express how much I agree with you.

It took me months to find out why shuffle/repeat are so unreliably present or not.

Being able to select them in the menu bar I thought something must be broken, but Apple left it out by design.

How did this get thumbs up in the meeting where they discussed usability?

Oh sheesh, what's going on here...

If this is in one of the replies below, apologies. I was having the same issue, and I could have sworn in the old iTunes the buttons showed all the time like they do on my iPhone; they didn't appear until I started playing a song. Then I could hit repeat and so on.
