Just so everyone is aware, in addition to the original Gizmodo article someone else posted earlier in this thread, this issue is now hitting many other blogs:

    http://www.macrumors.com/2013/06/20/new-macbook-air-owners-complaining-of-wi-fi- issues/

    http://www.idigitaltimes.com/articles/18428/20130621/macbook-air-wifi-problems-2 013-802-11ac.htm

This I thought was particularly funny:

"there does seem to be a gadget god serving up a possible solution to the WiFi issue. Wifiguru reports..."

Unfortunately, they're not telling us anything we didn't already know, but hopefully it will increase pressure on Apple to acknowledge the issue and come up with a fix. My MBA was purchased through a third party in HK, and I'm now in Mainland China, so I have no hope of having it returned or exchanged :-(((

I appreciate what wifiguru is trying to do, more specifics will help us identify the issue, but unfortunately we will not be able 'resolve the issue' because we do not have control over routers that we use when on the road.

I must say I am extremely disappointed with the unstability wifi connection with my new MBA 13". I am the second person purchased this new model at my office and the two of us both encounter this wifi disconnectin problem. I see from the web that this is not a single incident. Rather this is a defect that Apple needs to take action to remedy immediately.

I was so excited about 802.11ac support and that was the only reason I bought this new MBA.  I am writing here because I want to be heard.

Just in the hope that apple do something about this I'm posting as another user who is experiencing wi-fi issues. Count me as plus one

This is my 2nd MBA also, purchased 6-13.  After trying things through these suggestions (thanks everyone) because I got nowhere when calling Apple, I changed to WPA2 and picked another channel.  Better at home.  But I couldn't download and install Office 365.  I spent 2 hours at various times with Microsoft's helpdesk to no avail, but then I tried it yesterday leaving WIFI diagnostics running.  It worked.  This is my first Mac and I'm about to return it because I travel alot- Can't mess with routers everywhere else.  Too bad because I love everything else about it.  Waiting another day or two to see if there is a fix.

    Router:  Dlink DIR-655

that's exactly the frustration - lack of communication.

Acknowdegement of a probem and letting people know that a fix is in works is the least Apple can do.

When I went to the genius appointment 3d ago, they had no info on this.

They looked at this thread and some Mac news but said unless there is something official from Apple there is nothing they can do!

    I have some good news!

I went to the Apple store here in Hong Kong with my MacBook air. The genius guy I talked to have personally heard about this problem and has also read up on it. He says he believes is a software problem and that Apple will Release a fix shortly. We also tested the connection in the Apple store and it did not drop the connection.

Here's the good news, he did mention that The genius guys received an internal memo this morning stating that Apple HQ is aware of this problem and are working on a fix. He did note that this was not an official acknowledgment but for internal use only.

Let's hope they fix it soon.

PS.after having had no issues at the Apple store I visited a Starbucks and a restaurant and the connection dropped at both places.

Certainly, it's Apple's new Airport Extreme with 802.11AC. Not sure what to expect when I go into work tomorrow and try to use wifi there but Apple's new router fixed my problem at home.

M.R. get used to the lack of communication from Apple. It's the status quo. They rarely say anything about anything and when they do just be surprised like the rest of us. This is holding up my annual MacBook Air purchase as I try to sell my existing 2012 model on eBay. I may end up with nothing to use and I won't go with any kind of pro models because they are to big and expensive too boot. I still consider the premium price for a retina display to be laughable. Oh and some might call the MBA expensive, but its the best portable out there.

I am having the same problem with my new 2013 13" Macbook Air. Everything worked beautifully at home but now I am actually on vacation for the next two weeks and the wifi drops constantly. I bought it from a Best Buy in Virginia and I have no hope of returning it seeing as the box and receipt are about 3 hours away from me. I am really hoping this is a software issue that can be resolved fairly quickly

Also; the wifi can be restored after turning my wifi off and then back on.

Me again... remember I said I went to the Apple store and exchanged it for a different one... and that everything was fine with the new one? No - same problem.  To reiterate, I have four other MacBooks running at my house (two other Airs) as well as at least ten various other WiFi devices such as iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touches... no problems.

This one connects... and then a few minutes later it can't get a webpage or be in the iTunes store or download Cloud content... and so on. It says it's connected, but of course it isn't.

I am returning the MacBook Air tomorrow, and will repurchase in the Fall if/when Apple figures it out. There's a major problem here, and I lack the technical skills, time, or money to test/configure/replace everything in my house... only to have the same issue on the road.

HEADS UP:  Even though I am a customer in Berlin, I just got an email followed by a lengthy call with Engineering in Austin, TX. There is awareness of the issue, and I ran/provided logs from the non-working (second) MBA purchased yesterday, as well as the working MBA which I bought six weeks ago.

No news beyond "they're aware"... but they're aware enough to call a customer in a foreign country.

    Best,

Mac air 2013 the same problem routers Netgear WGR614v10 and Netgear wndr 4000 drops every 5 to 40 minutes, tried change speed settings, all channels, different types of encryptions, settings in keychain, sing and pray, no matter if i have  open or closed wireless diagnostics still dropping connection.   for  money and time i spend, i would've be able to buy 2 mile of rope and box of soap and use it on apple stuff who sells raw product. i'm so disappointed

Just want to reiterate that I have an Asus RT-N16 router. I had this problem after I got my new 2013 MBA and my router at the time was running DD-WRT. Reformatting did not work. However, changing my router firmware to Tomato (shibby build) solved the problem at home. So, if you have an ASUS RT-N16 router, load Tomato firmware. Seeing as how other people have exchanged their MacBook Airs with the no improvement, it sounds like this is software/firmware. So, I'd suggest either returning the computer, or fiddling with your firmware until (hopefully) Apple comes up with a solution.

I had just ordered my MBA and found out about this problem. I'm curious if this is a fix that apple can do via firmware update or not. I'm moving abroad at the end of August so until then I'm not really planning on using my MBA outside the house much so I can just connect it directly to the router.

But if this is a hardware problem I'm not sure how I could get apple to help me when I'm in another country. So if waiting for a firmware update is all that's necessary I'm okay with sticking with my purchase. But if you guys think it might be hardware that needs replacing I might consider canceling the order.
