Q: My Mac mini thinks my monitor is 4:3 when it's a widescreen monitor, what should I do?

I don't know what to do! It's not my monitor, I went to my other Mac and it worked, it's my 2012 Mac mini that's the problem. I use a thunderbolt to VGA adapter, and it's connected via VGA. I know this is unrelated, but my 1080p monitor makes icons look very low res, what do?

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)
